Chatterbaits

Was fishing with my uncle the other night and we had a blast using chatterbaits. We were using them in eel grass with a little current and the fished seemed to just crush it idk if it just felt like just because it has that much vibration or if the fish just like it that much more than lets say a spinnerbait, because it seems like they dont hit near as hard with a spinnerbait. Just seeing wut u guys think of chatterbaits and where you like to use them and in wut conditions… cuz its slowly becoming one of my favorites to throw

Ive been trying them once in a while for a couple of years. I have not yet get into a good bite with them, but I probably haven’t been giving them a fair chance, they look and feel great though.

Been thinking alot about those baits after we got off of the water Jon. Just a guess but thinking the warmer the water the more effective they are. You’re right, the fish zero in and crush that thing.
Going to try and tweek a few of those baits this week to get the most bang out of them .
Can you buy the component blade separate anywhere and do they come in larger or mag sizes?
Wouldn’t bail on the spinner baits just yet Jon, still think they will always be more consistant but this year they don’t seem to shine as much for some odd reason

Jeff they make seperate components for chatterbaits. Any lure craft catalog has them. I have a couple catalogs if you want them. Sounds like you guys had a good time and got into some nice fish. I have never thrown one but I really should add a few to the arsenal. I suppose the exrta vibration mimics fleeing baitfish so they just pound it. I’m just curious as to how weedless they are? Dan

I usually have one tied on to a rod at all times. The northerns really like them. I will agree with Jeff about their effectiveness in warmer water. I like how sharp the blade is, because if you get hung up on some weeds just give it a good rip and the blade usually cuts the weeds off. Can’t do that as well with a spinner bait.

I will also say that I don’t think that they are the most durable bait. I now buy the chatters with the flexible wire tied to the hook. A much better design in my opinion.

Check out http://www.lurepartsonline.com ( Old stamina tackle )for parts to build you own. They sell everything you will need to make you own from the jig to various size and colored blades. They are called Jig dancer blades on their site. They sell both a Mag blade as well as one with bubble holes that works excellent. Check them out. I think the ones you make work as well or better than the store bought ones. If you make up a few of you own let use all know how they work for you.

Glad they worked for you, I have not had any luck throwing them at all.

I have used them for a few years now and have made our own using home-poured football jigs with blades bought from Netcraft. These do work well but seem to have their place. One day you’ll out fish your buddy throwing a spinnerbait and the next day you’ll get spanked.

When buying blades, watch the thickness of the material if that info is available. I usually like to bend the blades slightly to change the action the most recent blades I bought are real think and tough to bend – good and bad I guess.

    Good luck
