I’m a pool 4 guy, and my go to topwater is a zara puppy. Something with red on it. I never fish the river without one tied on. A number 6 chug bug or Rapala skitter pop are always good to have along too.

The Strike King Bleeding Spit-N-King has been a great river smallie bait for me. I also give a thumbs up to the chug bug. Colors can vary day-to-day, depending on water clarity and available sun light, as well as the forage base on the particular body of water. Our Smallie topwater bite doesn’t tend to really get going until summer.

Dahlberg Diver or Block Head Popper……if you use a flyrod.

Chrome and blue rattlin’Chug Bug, or a Mann’s Baby 1-, twitch it in the strike zone and then steady retrieve back home.

Thanks Guy’s So you would prefer a Chug Bug or a Chug type bait over say a Zara spook or a side to side type bait?

Never overlook a buzzbait, some of my biggest smallies have come from a buzzbait.Throw the kitchen sink at ’em,they will tell you what they want.

Standard floating stickbaits like Rapalas can also work well on top. I like tiny torpedos too.

I will not fish a river without a couple of White Buzzbaits, Chug Bug, Skitter Pop and Skitter Prop.

Try a buzzing shad or flapping shad soft jerk bait for explosive strikes. Rip the rod out of your hands ….

    Enjoy
