A friend of mine helped me to come up with an idea for another use with the custom football head jigs that I make. I pour quite a few 1/2 ounce football heads on a Owner 5/0 deep throat flippin’ hooks for some of the deeper empoundments. Truthfully I don’t use the 1/2 oz’ers as much anymore as I find myself turning more into shallow water fisherman in the last couple of years. Back to my point, my friend was actually using the ones I made for them and rigging the jig on the outside of the plastic swimbait.
The one thing I didn’t like about that is fact that if a fish grabs grabs your swimbait by the tail it has the potential to pull the bait down from the jig. So what I did is took a small scissors and made a 1/8 encision where the dorsal area of the swimbait would be. Then stuff the football head on the inside of the plastic, the key is running the jig over water before doing so. Now granted this is not weedless, but I tend to fish more rock structure than weeds as I’m using these for Smallies. What I really like about stuffing the jig on the inside is it brings your hook back much further.
It held up very well when experimenting on Monday and Friday (although I refined the idea more on Monday). The other thing to note is I do feel that the football head tends to give the bait just a bit more of an erradatic action. Here are the pics, any thoughts, ideas?
