I got out on pool 8 Friday afternoon after the rain for a few hours and fished Saturday in the HOWLING wind. Face is still a bit numb from that
But this was a weekend that I owe a lot of credit to my electronics! I installed my new Humminbird 1197c SI and WOW the $2800.- price tag felt a whole lot easier to swallow. We could cruise by areas at 5-6mph and it was like watching a video (on a plasma big screen)! But most importantly, I found why fish were stacked up where there were!
I was shocked to find the water was much warmer than I anticipated. 58/59 in most sloughs and found one as high as 60.4F.
Crankbaits were the hot ticket all Friday afternoon. Key was finding timber lodged into rock piles and a moderate amount of current. Too little, or too much current and no fish. Couldn’t find a fish relating to “just” wood anywhere. But then, when there hitting cranks, why spend so much time pitching?
Saturday’s cold front really changed things up. Water temps dropped about 4-6 degrees over night. Smallies were bumping cranks, but not eating them. Most were hooked by the very edge of their mouth or the top of the head. Caught about 25 leagal size bass total. Mostly carolining the deepest edge you could find out and around the rock piles were there was timber. This is were the 1197 really paid off. Very quickly we found that if there was timber lying in front of the rocks in 6-10fow, I was hammering. Blank bottom in front of rocks – No fish!
We spent some time back into the flooded timber, but the wind did a number with slamming my boat into trees – gave up on that pretty quick!
Despite the weather, put together a pretty good weekend.
