I’m not going to say how I know about this. For those of you getting ready for the start of the season and spooling line on your baitcasting reels. Make sure you tighten the spool when you are finished. It will prevent a disaster on your first cast.

Let’s just say I’ve learn from past experiences. I know it happened last year so the other night while I was spooling new line I made sure to tighten the spool on each reel before I set it down.

Kind of like remembering to re-tighten your drags before you try and set the hook on that first hit in the spring

Also, check that the reel is tightened down in the reel seat before the first cast, not going to say how I know that either.
