Stop piling up 40 open ended questions in the bass forum and hit the water???

    Just joking.

PS, I’m not even sure if I know where Ely is.

There are some very nice Largemouth in the boundary waters…they are not a target species up there and usually get released to live longer lives.
However an 18-19″ 4-4.5 lber is going to be about 12 years or older…the long cold water months up there inhibit growth. A 6 lber will be a phenomenal fish up there.
Go up there in June and fish warm shallow bays with lots of cover…I have had AWESOME topwater action then and caught a few in the 5lb class…lots of 3# and 4# fish!
You will be disappointed if you are going to EXPECT one 5# or bigger…You need to go SOUTH for those 6#+++ whoppers on a consistent basis.

If I was headed to the Ely area Largemouth would not be my target. there are better options such as smallies and walleyes. Even Lakers.

If I can remember the names right this is what you do: Just East of Ely head up the Echo trail about a mile or two miles and pull over at Bass Lake trail. Hike the trail around to the north side of Bass Lake and fish where Dry Lake Falls empties into Bass Lake. I caught a 5 lb bass there many years ago and some nice bluegills too! Good luck!

Attention Everyone!! The man who wrote this needs help. Smallies are pretty cool though. Walleye, ok. Both the largemouth and smallmouth from most of the clean, clear waters near Ely all taste as good as the walleye, and they actually pull back when being reeled in.
