I like green or black colors. I like to pop them across the top of the water to give them life!
August 20, 2007 at 12:31 am #601371I tend to stay with the natural colors, green and browns.
For presantation: Twitch-Twitch-Pause. Over and Over.
OR Twitch it while trying to leave it in one place, Walk the dog also works, and the last one I use is twitch it fast as possible back to the boat.
Keep changing untill you find one that works for that dayAugust 20, 2007 at 1:07 am #601383I have had really good luck with the white sunburst color. also greens, black and purple. I like to get it tossed out there, if hte pads are light and there is alot of water between them, I just use a steady retrieve to get it back tot he boat, then if that don’t work, try the twitching and slowly swim it after a breif pause after the twitch, like Slider said, you just have to see what is the bite going for that day. today on tonka, it was a twitch with a slow steady retrieve, all where shorties, but they where biting. also the northerns and muskies like them frogs as well, so be carefull.

August 20, 2007 at 1:08 am #601384another thing that you might want to try is getting a bigger profile in the water. use the littlier scummies in the spring, later into summer and fall, get into the trophey size or spro frogs, if you find that they are just hitting the longer tails, cut them shorter to get more hook ups on your blow ups.

August 20, 2007 at 4:08 am #601439I keep the black one tied on at all times. it is my go to color. if black doesn’t work, I’ll go to a different lure.
if there is any kind of frog bite going, i’ll throw black.
Jack.
JerryRuffoloPosts: 7August 27, 2007 at 11:56 pm #603660I like to throw black, but I haven\\\’t personally had a good frog bite all year.
August 28, 2007 at 12:32 pm #603778I was out again last night for a couple of hours. Caught 4 bass, the largest was about 2 pounds. Rolled a couple bigger. All fish were caught on points deep in the weeds.
August 28, 2007 at 7:53 pm #603923I will always start with a white frog and have even started fishing docks with them this year and caught some really nice bass on them.
I also like to throw swimming frogs to give the water a little churning action behind the frog.
If I had one way to fish it would be with frogs.
September 3, 2007 at 12:32 am #605112I keep a green with yellow belly SPRO tied on at all times, if it doesn’t produce I try another rod with a white one.
September 5, 2007 at 5:31 pm #605809black or dark on cloudy days, anything else on bright days. The fish I found this summer didn’t really care about color so much. But it seemed like under cloudy skies the black produced better..My favorite colors are Natural red, black, green/yellow, and the yellow frog (spro). I have a pretty good collection of these color spro frogs, and all of them look like they went through a war zone…
September 6, 2007 at 10:52 pm #606334I appreciate all your insightful suggestions. Over the past 3 weeks I managed to catch a number of very nice bass, the coolest part was that you just cant bet doing this on top waters! Had to head back into the classroom limiting my time on the water, as a follow up question- how far into the fall season are scum frogs successful? Thanks to all for helping me learn more about this kind of pattern.

Late
In the fall the frogs will migrate back to the shallow mud to dig in for their hibernation. That time frame can be some of the best topwater action all year. I normally throw buzzbaits just to cover more water but a scum frog is still tied on a different rod. I will stop topwater when I can no longer hear frogs singingSeptember 7, 2007 at 9:59 pm #606712Like he just said that most people start using more buzzbaits in the fall. This is when I start using more swim frogs and bringing them across open water and let the legs just flop around and buzz the surface. I do this until I put the boat away for winter which is when the ice is too thick to break at the ramp.
September 24, 2007 at 12:38 am #610418my bite really has dropped off since the big rain for this type of bait.. and this weekend I noticed a ton of eel grass had already cut back, and any pads that were above water looked like they had taken a beating. and were dying. of course, the two days that I fished were immediately after a front. so I would also like to hear if you guys are still ratting out there..
