    What are some good smallie lakes in Minnesota? Looking to take a late summer trip to catch smallies and need some ideas on where to go. Thanks.

    Mille Lacs is the best water, that is close to the cities.
    Upper Mississippi River would come in 2nd (if not first).
    St. Croix is another great option.
    Lake Pepin holds a good population.

    Going further north, Lake Vermillion comes to mind.

    Since I live in Iowa I don’t get the opportunity to fish many of the Minesota Smallie lakes. But, having fished Mille Lacs the end of June with Sliderfisn, I would not hesitate to return to Mille Lacs with the sole purpose in mind to fish Smallies.

    Another Sleeper Bass and Smallie lake by Vermillion is Pelican in Orr, MN.

    Some of my favorites are;
    ~Rainy Lake
    ~LOTW (Meads Spruce Island camp area….east about 4 miles! )
    ~Mille Lacs
    ~Vermilion
    ~BWCA

    I have been to alot of good smallie waters over the years, LOTW, Mille LAcs, Vermilion, Rainy Lake, Mille Lacs, BWCA area lakes, and I always come back to the Upper Miss and feel blessed that we have such a fantastic fishery for smallies. Its the best waters I know personally for plenty of nice sized smallies and unmatched scenery. Again this is only my personal list. Mille Lacs is tough to beat for top honors for bigger smallies, but the River is a place that you can always fish due to mother nature’s high winds and weather related hazards! From Coon Rapids to Brainerd yeilds some of the finest smallies waters there is IMO!

    Steve’s post pretty much sums it up.
    There are a bunch of smaller lakes that have great smallmouth fishing but the ones listed so far would have to all be in the top ten best.
