Smallie Baits

    What are the best smallmouth baits this time of year on northern minn. lakes? I have river fished for smallies, but never on lakes? Any advice would be useful. Thanks.

    Wacky rigged senko
    Tube, dark with red fleck
    Jig and half a crawler

    If I were to grab 2 plastics they would be senko’s and Tubes. On the other rod I would carry a rattle trap or small spinner bait.

    Just my .10 and a place to get started.

    Topwater—> Chug Bugs, Pop-R’s, and Spooks.

    I’ve been known to throw a Mepps at gunpoint as well.

    I agree, Pop-R would be a great lure for overtop of those long shallow underwater points and sunken reefs.
    Jimmy D’s Riverbugs would be my second tool in the arsenal if I had to only bring two lures with me to a Northern Mn lake.
