I was wondering how some of you fish lakes when it’s real windy?!? Like today in MN, lower to mid 70’s with winds in the 20’s+? I was out today from about 10 am to 12:30 and had a low stringer. I was using a jig with a Crazy Chunk from Pro Tour Baits and slowed down the presentation a little because of the cooler weather and still had minimal success. Any thoughts??

I like to look for the windiest areas and throw craks, swim jigs, and spinner baits form the deep weed line all the way to shore. If it is cloudy I will also head to the deep rocks.

I agree with Mike. Those windy shorelines can up your odds quite a bit with all the wind pounding on a shoreline or piece of structure. And staying directly upwind from the spot you are fishing will give you the best control of your lure IMO.

I’ll add use a drift-sock to parallel the wind-blown flats and work them with a horizontal presentation. As Mike and Steve said wind-blown areas usually equal active fish. I’d even suggest working between docks with a spinnerbait. Another bonus of fishing with the wind at your back is you will less bow in you line and better feel.

I was recently on vacation, and had to deal with wind a lot. I spent most of my time fishing the reefs of Waconia. I would try to fish the side of points that had the wind blowing in my face. I like to use a small spinner bait as a search lure fishing it mostly on the drop-letting it helicopter down. Once I found one fish, I’d throw the marker and motor around to the other side of the point and anchor. Now I’d have the wind to my back, and could cast about anything I’d want, like a very light texas rig, drop shot, or what ever. Meanwhile I’m bouncing around in my little Lund, but able to work an area over pretty good.
