Just wondering what system of either numbered or color coded markers holds in place the best and has worked well for you? I currently use the one with the metal spring loaded clips and color coded rubber floating tubes with the white plastic writing board with black grease pencil. I clip them on the upper lip of smallies but they always seemed to come off over time. I only fish 2 tourneys a year but what a disappointment to open the livewell and have fish that have shook them loose. Just wondering what you have had success with. Any help is greatly appreciated! I can’t speak specifically to which is the best to attach to a bass’s lip for marking them. I can tell you that a beam is absolutely essential in determining weight differences between 2 equal measuring fish.

Replace your sping clips with those from a metal stringer and you’ll be set. I have the x-tools, but replaced the clips with the aformentioned. If the fish are close, I’ll use a beam.

copper- i have the same system- you need to put the clip on with the longer end in the mouth, shorter outside on the top lip. They dont come out for me that way and before i paid attention they did about half the time. Try it before you buy the metal stringer clips.

Thanks guys for the great replies, I do have a beam and I will have to pay attention on the way I clip them! Thanks again!

I agree with bassbaron. I use the clips as well…

The X-tools system is great. I too have had problems with the clips coming off…especially when you have an 8 fish limit instead of 5 or 6. What I did is cut the float off of the x-tool tag and zip tied it to one of the pincher style rubber tags. This saves from putting another hole in the fish and they will not come off.

I use the Bag’em Tag System. It has stainless steel clips that clip to the lip and attached to them are different colored rubber tubes. They work great, don’t tangle and don’t harm the fish. I have never had a clip come off. I started using them because the stringer clips just caused too much damage.

I made my own, some orange nylon rope, some red and white bobbers, a 3/8 drill bit, a cordless drill and the clips off of a metal stringer. costed me about a whole whoppin $6, i had the metal stringer. it worked just fine on sunday during club tourney, also you could just put a metal clip in their mouths to tell whose is whose and you can figure out what ones you want to cull with the help of your trusty digital scale.

I fish in about 16 tourneys a year and had to go the numbered system of x-tools and replace the clips as well, cause I have a color disorder and I accidently threw back the wrong color one time and it was our second biggest fish and it ended up costing me angler of the year.

    That will never happen again.
