I am wondering about Bass and northern movements during high water levels in the lakes here in MN. Opener is in a few weeks so any advice on what bass and northern do when water levels are at their highest would be great. I am assuming they move shallow where the baitfish have more food due to the high water? THANKS ALL!

I can’t help other than to say to follow the food. Bass have to eat. They are going to be where the forage is… Find what they are eating, and where that food is locating and you’ll connect. The good thing about spring bass is that they will usually stay in the same pattern for weeks.

Initially after ice out all bass head to either the only weeds on the lake or extremely shallow cover, this is often timber or rocks. Once the water starts warming up throughout the lake the bass will start to release from being basically on the bank. They will swim around a bit more and start making beds basically. By opener they should either be spawning or just getting done. The ice came off pretty quickly this year compared to what everyone thought it would be. Hope this helps! This is for inland bodies of water, as that is what I think you were talking about.

I’d start searching the north end the lake wherever there was a dark bottom. Do not be afraid to look real shallow if there is any cover. If you are talking high water in a river then look for good current breaks close to shore.

Contrary to others predictions of the spawn being on or over,I don’t think much spawning is taking place yet. Maybe some on beds but minimal. Most should be shallow or very near.
