My 5 Year Old Versus a 20” Bass

On Wednesday night, Wyatt and I went fishing at our new favorite spot after super. We stated off bobber fishing with worms without much luck. We moved along the shore a few times trying to find the fish. I decided to switch to a shallow Shad Rap. I quickly caught a couple of smaller ones while he was having a snack. I asked if he wanted to use one of my Rapala crank baits or keep using a worm. He quickly chooses the Rapala.

We were on our last cast when something special happened. He was letting his lure float on top and jerking it along once and a while. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a swell in the water and he tells me I have one Daddy. A few seconds later I see this giant bass go airborne trying to throw the hook. All I can think is for him to keep his line as tight as possible. Keep in mind that he is using his trusty Lightning McQueen 2 foot kid combo. I grab my phone and got some raw video footage of him reeling it in and the fish going airborne for a second time. I couldn’t stop telling him to “keep going, keep going buddy”.

Once out of the water I realized just how big and special of a fish this was. It measured 20” from tail to an open mouth and was an estimated 5 pound largemouth bass. I am so proud of him and feel so blessed to see him catch this kind of a bass. Thanks deertracker (DT) for getting Wyatt this fishing pole when he turned 3 and for getting me back into fishing.

    Thank you Lord!

Nothing better than getting a kid into fishing. Keeps them excited for weekends and out of trouble.

    Cool story.

Great fish. Hope he stays hooked on the sport for the rest of his life. That fish may be hard to Top. Then again the fun is in trying to top it.

    Gee Whizz

Wyatt just made me envious. Where can I get one of those monster wrangling fishing poles. I wanna catch a 20 inch bass myself.
