Mille Lacs smallie spots out of the wind?

Hey folks, I’m RV camping with my in-laws up near Mille Lacs. My boat is only 17 feet, so I’m a little worried about, wind. Wondering if anyone has some good suggestions for smallmouth areas that would be somewhat protected from the wind. Thanks!

I’ve done all my smallmouth fishing up here in the fall, and out of friends’ 21-foot boats, so some of my go-to spots might not be safe in wind.

    Funny

The Cedar Creek landing will put you right in some good Smallmouth territory for an East or South wind. Red Door would be a good launching point for any type of North wind.

Your 17′ boat would only be trouble in a 25+ mph wind. Or if you have no idea how to navigate a boat. You can go anywhere this weekend.

I regularly use my 17′ boat on superior without issue. Even in 3-6′ waves.

I just came off of Cove Bay (SW corner) got some real chunky smallies pitching small perch flicker shads and twitching them down some rock/mud transitions in 8-10′. Starting to get some cabbage coming up on the transition so they were milling around. 21″ @ 5lb 3oz was the biggest this afternoon.

I’ve been piloting watercraft since I was 7 years old. But my father-in-law, not so much. And he’s got a bum leg right now, so I’m hoping mostly to put him on a few fish, but not bounce him around too much.

LOL. Rest assured, all smallmouth caught will endure a quick photo shoot and then be returned to the water.

before you return them you should bounce them very hard off the side of your boat, or just keep them and give them away to your friends that want fish. they will taste just fine and that lake has way too many smallies in it!! unless your a bass guy lol then there could never be enough right……. keep them theres a reason the dnr loosened the regulations on them on mille lacs. they are over populated
