What are the best baits to throw in early Spring for bass? I fish in a lot of small lakes and ponds if that makes any sort of difference in what I throw. The water is usually clear and tough to catch fish, so I need your guy’s help to help me upper lip em’ this season! Thanks.

I toss a white booyah spinner bait early on in the spring and I have done very well on that the past few years. Its a manmade stocked lake so it isnt your typical bass fishing, but they hit it hard nonetheless!

From when the lake is half frozen until the water hits about 40º a jerkbait is your best choice. Once it hits 40 a lipless, jig, or spinnerbait crawled along will work well. once the water hits 50 you can throw about anything you want, they will be pretty active by then.

Not sure what state your fishing in but make sure the bass are in season if your fishing early spring. Jerk baits work great, but you have to fish them real slow. You can also have good luck with football jigs on the bottom also worked slow.

Imho, you can’t beat a jig and plastic. Fish a swim jig like a spinner bait, work it slow like a nice big crawdad.

Jigs are my favorite presentation all year round. In the spring, I tend to use 1/4 – 3/8 oz black and blue jigs. Fishing near wood or cover adjacent to a spawning ground are usually a safe place to start.

I really like a slow dropping jig 3/32 oz Outkast Money jig dressed with a 4″ grub. Either a trigger x 4″ or a Kalin’s 4″. The slow drop is deadly over beds and near any kind of cover.

Rapala Shad Raps are very good this time of year.

Here’s a link to an article I wrote for Rapala about how Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Mike Iaconelli modifies his Shad Raps in the spring to get more bites:
