Drop shot question regarding line diameter??

Wondering what size/lbs/thickness I should use for drop shoting for SMB?? If someone says “6 lb or 8 lb” it should be noted there is a big difference in line diameter between line manufacturers.

For example, I personaly like Fluor. Segaur invizix 10 lb Fluor. which has a line diameter of .010″ and would like to use this for drop shoting. Both Stren Fluor and Trilene XT mono have .012″ diameters in 10 lb (20% is a big difference). I would imagine other manufactures 8 lb diameter is the same as Segaurs 10 lb.

I guess my question is would .010″ diameter line be too thick to drop shot finesse baits for SMB? I know every situation is different (water clarity, spooky fish, depth, etc.); but in general, would this line diameter be OK to drop shot or do I need to step it down to .008″ diameter??

I use pline cx premium for drop shotting. 6lb (.0084 in, .21mm). It is super strong, more like 8lb, but yet super sensitive.

10# will work, but might not be ideal depending on what you plan to be using. I’ve used up to 17# mono before, drop shotting tubes straight down in weeds.

I’m not sure on the exact diameter, but I’ve been using 8lb test Berkley vanish and have been very pleased. I experimented with 10 lb test and it seemed too stiff and not as limber as I wanted for finesse fishing. You also get a lot less drag on those windy days or fishing in the current. If you go with the lighter diameter make sure you have a good drag system.

I checked online and your 8 lb Vanish is .010″ the same as my 10 lb Seagaur Fluor…I may start with I have and see how it works; maybe go from there.

I liked the 8lb. invizx I used last year. I think most guys would tell you 10lb. is too much for clear water, but you are right about line diameter. Running cajun fluoro in 8lb. right now, but havent used it a whole lot for drop shot yet. I can say I havent broke a fish of with the cajun yet. Lots of guys run 6lb. in clear water. I usually only look into the diameter if im comparing a couple lines when I buy it, and forget after that.

Depends on depth. I like to use 7lb Sunline Sniper Flouro in depths down to 15ft. Depths of 20-40ft I will use 6-8lb braid (with a flouro leader) for increased sensitivity.
