Back in the day many used live frogs on weedless hooks cast into the pads for bass.
This method was deadly for bass and lots of fun to say the least.Seems that frogs are scarce now, I don’t hear or see many using them.
The artificials seem to work, but nothing like the action we got on years ago on those live froggies.
Time seem to change things, this is true with froggin’ too.
I would like to hear others take on this.

Growing up in Washburn we used to gather leopard frogs by the dozens and use them for bass, pike, cats and walleyes.
Hardly ever see more than a few together at a time now.I don’t think I could kill them now.
We have polluted the water so bad that they are getting rare.

I would use them all the time! Until recently I got lazy and didnt want to go find them…Plus you cant really cast them and expect them to live very long. We used to quietly troll into the pads and set them down and troll out.

For some reason I would have a hard time puting a hook through a frog. It’s not like i’m a frog rights activist either.

we tried for channel cats last year and it’s a tricky proposition keeping them from jumping out of the cooler and then hanging on to one long enough to get a hook through, not to mention very unpleasant..

when my grandfather was alive we used live frogs as a walleye bait on some of the sloughs around Minnewaska. Great shore fishing,25 years ago.

Mice work way better than frogs… They squeal and bring up from deep water…

Buy a pkg of soft body toads…they catch lots of bass, cast farther and last way longer…

We used them on the crystal clear rock quarries in Iowa.Used a welding glove to hold them and hooked them through the skin of the shoulders.
The pet store guy loved us.75 cents a mouse.

I have done a little bit of tournament fishing, and they obviously don’t allow live bait, so I really never waste my time with live bait. I’m too busy always trying out new lures or techniques when I am fun fishing or pre-fishing.

Thats just the way I look at it..

Back in my Youth ( Thats a long way back ) Myself and several friends use to catch them by the hundreds and sold them to the bait stores in the area – They would buy as many as we could bring into them – Great source of spending money for use kids back then. We also use to use them for fishing Walleyes on the river – Nothing better than a live frog on a safty spin type of spinner. We also fished them for Bass in the pads off the Pier on a local lake. Those monster bass would hammer them when they would bite nothing else. I don’t even see them in bait stores anymore. Not sure if it is due to all the laws now. Or if they can’y find any kids willing to catch them for them.
