Headed out to my favorite East Metro Bass lake this morning very early. The Bass were more than willing to hammer topwaters this morning and the big females were on a tear. Three fish in the 20+ inch class and several more 18-19 inch fish as well as a bunch of smaller ones. Note: the water temp was 84 degrees. I took a quick picture of the first good fish and then had a heck of a time reviving her. This hot water is no good for CPR! The picture is lousy but that’s all the stress she could take. The rest of the fish were unhooked in the water next to the boat. Once the sun was on the water it slowed down considerably, even for the deepwater/jig fishing guys.

Nice job! What baits where you using for topwater?

Well, I do all my Bass fishing with a Fly rod. I was using foam poppers and Dahlberg Divers. I don’t know that there was anything special about those flies. I would imagine conventional topwaters would have worked well too. I did see a guy throwing Buzz Baits but never saw him connect. Most of the hits I got happened after the bug had been sitting still for a long time, like 30 seconds to a minute. So a Pop-R or something that you could work slow would have worked too.
