Today I went went fishing in the early morning and had little luck. I was getting quite a bit of bites, but just couldn’t connect. I wasn’t sure if they were sunnies biting at my bait, or if they were bass. I was getting all the bites on brush hogs texas rigged with a (2/0 changed to 4/0) EWG Worm Hook. Topwater seemed to die out for now at the pond and I don’t understand why. Can someone please help me out and tell me why the topwater bite ain’t working in the morning? Also if I am rigging the brush hog correctly and/or some more effective ways to rig it? Thanks.

The topwater bite being dead in the morning might be due to you using the same bait(s) during that period. Try switching up to something new or something of a diferent size, whether it be bigger or smaller. Color can be critical too, so don’t over look that.

As for the Brush Hogs, I rig mine on a 4-5/0 EWG hook. You might try going to a lighter weight, not knowing what you’re using, but sometimes Bass prefer the slower fall of a plastic on an 1/8th oz weight.

I rig brush hogs on a 4/0 EWG with either a 1/8 or 3/8 bullet weight. It seems they either want it slow falling, or fast falling. I usually fish them around brush (go figure right?) and sometimes crawl the outside of the weedline with them.
