First time trying Mille Lacs Smallmouth and was quite impressed…Fishing was good in the morning/early afternoon until the clouds came in and the wind picked. Fished the rock piles along the South end. Most were marked but we were also able to find a few with the Lakemaster chip.
Caught them on various plastics (top bait was 5″ grub) in 4 to 8′ of water. The big thing we did notice was when the clouds came in the bite shut right down. We also had some cough up crayfish near the boat. Big fish was 20 1/2″ and we caught several in the 17 to 18″ class…Even caught a rock pile slot walleye to boot.
The trip was more of a scouting mission and we will return. Hopefully, with clear skys and less wind.
