Headed out to my favorite East Metro Bass lake early. I set the alarm for 3AM and checked the radar before starting the coffee. It looked good so I was on the water by 4AM. First Bass of 2012 was in the boat at 4:12AM. The water temp was 66 degrees and the weeds were about where you’d expect them to be this time of year. Seven fish landed today with the best one just shy of the 20 inch mark. I was using my 8 weight and deer hair bugs. The sky started to get pretty dark and the lake was getting crowded so I left at 8AM.
Product review note for you fly fishers: Scientific Angler’s Sharkskin Flyline is the real deal. I’ve seen countless “innovations” in fly angling over the last twenty years and most of them fade away and are never seen again. This is different. The idea is that the fly line has little bumps on the surface that reduces friction in the guides and makes the line float higher. The stuff shoots like a 30-06. I doubt if my absolute maximum casting distance is any better; however normal casing is effortless and I can drop that bug out there an extra 15 or 20 feet away without having to grunt (or make a perfect cast). This is definitely a better casting line. The only downside I found was that the rough surface of the line will chew the skin off your fingers when you’re strippiong line fast while fighting a fish. I’d recommend some tape or a stripping sleeve.
