Jig loss prevention

In order to cut down on the number of lost jigs, I was wondering what methods you used to fish bass in waters with numerous pike. It has been suggested that I use tieable wire, but does that hurt presentation? Thanks in advance.

I have just accepted the fact that if a pike wants it… he’s gonna take it. Normally you can tell if it’s pike pretty quickly by the bite. All I do is try to set the hook as fast as I can. Their teeth saws through braid easily.

Sorry I didn’t answer the question. Yes the wire will hurt representation.

I’d use a very short leader if it is that much of a pain. I think the shortest you can get is 6″. Might hurt your presentation a little, but I also assume you are using pretty heavy jigs, which should minimize the affect on them.

    Try using a flourocarbon leader.

Something in the 20 to 30# range shouldn’t hurt your presentation any and will vastly improve the number of bite offs.

If you use to lite of a flouro leader, it won’t make any difference as pike will still bite through it. 20-30#’s is about as lite as I would go.

We use this setup on all our walleye jigging rods and it makes a big difference.

I’ve used tieable wire, and I think it works well and doesn’t affect the action much (if we’re talking about pitching or flipping jigs). It’s a kind of a PITA if you want to change lures, though.

Lately, I’ve just been letting the pike have them if they want them. I really don’t get a ton of bite-offs. It’s a good excuse to buy new tackle, too!

I usually use p-line fluoroclear in the 10#. I will be headed up north in a couple of weeks and plan to experiment with both wire and heavier fluoro.

Reminds me of my nephew this weekend asking if he needed a leader because he was using 65# power pro for pike. I asked him if he though a 1/2 oz razor could break his line.

I use power pro for a lot of jigs. They bite off every now and then but not to the point that I’m worried about it. Also if you suspect a pike don’t set the hook, shake your rod moving the jig in there mouth and a lot of time they will spit the hook. I save a lot of soft plastics using the same method.

I’m with Joe on this one… Lots of Pike and Skis up here in da U.P. where I fish Bass…I recently switched to a 12″ 40# Big Game Mono leader on my Frog Rods and if I get repeated bite offs on jigs i go to a 20# flouro…
