Seeing the Pulse R paddletails picture here got me thinking about trying some paddletails as trailers on swimjigs, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits. Has anyone used them as trailers? If so, how has it worked? I’d like to find some a little longer than the 3.25″ of the Pulse – R’s Anyone know of something longer with a good tail action and rather durable?

I have been using paddle tails and K grubs as trailers for years with great results.
As a trailer I still prefer the action from the K Grub tail but have had success with the paddle tail too.

Northland tackle recently came out with a new 4″ paddletail come in a 8 pack and in a variety of colors for like 3 bucks and some change. I bought a couple packs to try for walleyes and they definitely catch walleyes but I’ve also caught several both largemouth and smallies on these this year both on a jig and as a trailer on spinnerbaits.

I’ve been fishing swimbaits as trailers on swim jigs, chatterbaits, and big spinnerbaits for years. Sometimes they will out fish a grub or split tail trailer 10:1.

I use zoom swimmin’ flukes now.

Another good technique is to take a skirt off a spinnerbait and put a swimbait on. This works really well in clear water.

I think this is a little off the question but here goes. On Pike trips up on the borderland we’ve been using 4″ Gulp minnow grubs as trailers on larger Mepps bucktails.

When to use? This is when we start getting an abnormally high number of follows right behind the bait but not opening their mouth.

Don’t know if it was the extra action or the scent but it does help in this specific pattern. We tried this about four years back and have reused it with success on a few different trips since. Just discovered IDO recently and will be putting an order in to BFishn tackle to try some of their plastics. Will be interesting to try this again head to head against Gulp.

The guys on Falcon Lake in Texas really like the Lake Fork Tackle “Magic Shad” as a Spinnerbait trailer. They have a very subtle swimming action.
