What are you guys doing to prevent northerns from biting your line off while casting to weeds for bass? A higher test braided line? Went out with a friend and lost a few buzz baits and spinners to the pike.
    Thanks…

I have used fireline. I have caught smaller pike with no issue. I would always make sure there aren’t any nicks though.

One way to solve the problem is just fish for walleye, Not only do you not have to worry about the northerns tearing up your line but you don’t have to touch those grass carp either

I rarely lose spinerbaits or buzzbaits to pike…those must have been either very large or had very poor aim.

I never use leaders when fishing specifically for bass but if it’s an issue for you, try a fine wire leader, it shouldn’t affect your buzzbait except for the additional weeds you’ll collect and if the water isn’t too clear, it shouldn’t hurt your spinnerbaits all that much.

I contend that braid cuts just as easy as mono in a pike’s mouth but you may have faster reaction or the stiffer line may get the lure further out of their mouth on the hookset.

Some guys like TyGer leader http://www.tygerleader.com/ for pike while bass fishing too but I haven’t tried it…

I’ll use a leader when I am concerned about it because I know there may be pike in the area. I probably lose more plastics to pike than spinnerbaits. If you are concerned, just use a short, pliable 6″ leader. I normally use black too, because I don’t want any sun reflections spooking a fish.

I agree with slop bass!! Those baits are expensive.

I love 20lb Tygerwire when fishing for bass knowing the gators are around. The stuff is very pliable and does not seem to effect the action of spinners, swim jigs or top water baits. Not that I’m a pro Bass guy, just like catching whatever hits the end of my line

Then again, I’m the guy that will loosen 8 bolts, three screws, 2 ground straps and unplug as wire harness to remove the box of a truck and stand right next to the tank and change out a fuel pump

Lots of Pike and Muskies up here with the Bass on Buzzers or Frogs. A 12″ piece of Big Game 40# mono hasn’t let me down yet.

X2! That is exactly why I went down the DIY road. Great rainy day projects, plus you can tweak stuff to get better colors or action.
