Line for Swim Jigs

Sorry for all of the questions, but I need to pick some brains once more.

What line are you using for your swim jigs?

Here’s my situation. In the more broken/open cover I’ve been doing nicely with 15# Yo Zuri Hybrid for a few years. Lately I’ve been invading the heavier cover edges, lilly pads etc. and thinking braid might be the way to go. I recently bought a reel from an individual in Japan and it came filled with braid and I’m pretty sure it’s 40 or 55# Samuri Braid, but it’s pretty thin. Sure would be nice to cut through those pads rather than pulling that big gob back…

I know a lot of people like Braids for Swim Jigs. It is nice in the really heavy cover. I use 17 lb. Fluro for most all my swim jig fishing. The one problem I’ve had and seen with braid is that you sometime react TO QUICK and rip the jig away befor a fish has a good hold of the jig and the low strech causes you to rip the jig out / away from the fish. I’ve went back and forth and have had better luck with Fluro. What Brand of Swim Jigs do you like to use? If you have not tried one of the RC tackle ones give them a try. I really like them alot. They track strait without any side to side wobble that some have. The paint finish is the best that I’ve found. Give them a try I think you will really like them.

I throw em on 15-20 pound flouro, or 30-50 pound braid, depending on where I am fishing them.

I almost exclusively use 50# braid, liking Suffix these days, smooth stuff. Have used stren and power-pro in the past.

If I was fishing some clear water with little to no cover, I would run flouro…

I’m starting to get picky about swim jigs, and my best two have been the Brovarney and Lethal Weapons. Haven’t tried the RC, but I’ve tried a few others that I didn’t like including the All Terrain.

I typically have a couple swim jig rods on deck, so maybe I’ll try the braid on my heavier cover rig and see how it goes. I “get” the non-stretch issue with bass not getting the bait deep enough, and I’m a little concerned about my MH St. Croix being to much with braid…I guess I’ll find out.

The Brovarney jigs are a good one. If you want another option check out the ones from RC. They have some great colors that match a lot of the different forage that bass feed on http://www.rctackle.com

I throw mine on a 7′ M St. Croix for most applications and then the 7′ MH for the heavy cover setup. Monsoor usually threw his on a 7′ MH St. Croix but with 15# mono.

I’ve been using the Strike King KVD swim jig for a few years now and love them. I know it sounds cheesy but it’s really a good jig, runs true, the perfect skirt holds up really well and the keepers are nice (I take off the rattles). They have a heavy cover version with a stronger hook and stiffer brush guards I use on my heavy cover setup.

Unfortunately they have raised the price of the jigs because of KVD’s success so I may switch to the regular Strike King one but it only has the wire keeper.

I switch off depending on cover:
30# Braid in Heavy Cover, low water clarity,
6# Fireline Crystal for majority (I like it due to being very thin and cuts right through much of the slop Milfoil/Pads/Reeds), haven’t lost a fish or lure with it.
I use 8# Flouro in more open areas to light cover/clear water fishing.

When I am fishing in heavy vegetation I use a 7’4″ MH baitcaster… In clear water, like Chequamegon Bay, a Croix LTBC 69MLXF and 8-10# flouro…

…favorite Swim Jigs…Brovarney, All Terrain, Terminator, RC. The new Trigger X 4″ Grubs have been working well for me.

Line, the new Suffix 832 braid in 30#. I throw it in crystal clear to muddy water. Thick cover to open water.

It is mostly personal preference on the line.

I throw Brovarney’s Swim Jigs on a 7′ med fast action.

The kind of jig is a whole nother post.

I throw braid exclusively for swimjigs, mainly because i fish the river exclusively. If i were fishing more lakes i would have a fluoro setup as well. This year im trying the suffix 832 in 50lb test and love it, although it loses its color rather quickly. Throwing it on the new powell endurance 714 Heavy/ex fast tip and its the best swim jig rod I have used. The backbone on this rod is off the charts but the tip is very forgiving for those quick strikes. I dont by into the theory that fish see your line with braid since your typically moving the bait fast and twitching it looking for a reaction strike, i dont believe they can get a good look at it. As you can tell, theres not much finesse with my swimjig fishing

Thanks for all of your input.

    Lots of braid users.

I’m going to use try some braid on my “slop” swim jig rod, and see if it will cut through the pads and slop a little better when I hook a good bass. I’ll keep the YZH on my more open/broken cover swim jig rod because that line never lets me down for all around use. I’ve had a great year so far despite the unruly river levels.

when i switched from braid to 17 lb fluoro a few years back, my catch rate must have doubled. Swimming jigs is almost never a “fast” technique for me these days either….

doubled? come on now…i think its just a matter of fishing a rod with a good amount of tip and knowing how to let the fish eat the bait good before you set the hook. I probably dont fish a swimjig like most guys do tho, I throw it in stuff you’d normally frog in quite often

Im like most 40 lb braid in slop/pads or mud
15-20 lb fluoro if its clear water and less weeds

With braid not much hookset needed, almost lean into them like a crankbait. I use brovarney swim jigs almost exclusively. rod i had an old avid 70mhxf that was a good one, the new action is not the same- now i use a dobyns 733 for open water and a 744 in the heavy stuff.

I did try some braid and it was fine, but I didn’t care for the line management. Just didn’t seem to cast as well for me as my usual YZH. That said, I’m back to the Yo Zuri Hybrid and I’ve had an outstanding summer using it with my swim jigs.

I may have to try that yozuri, i find braid casts way better than most fluoro or mono especially after 2-3 outings
