Bass rod?

I seemed to have won a 7 foot medium heavy bait casting rod, too heavy for walleyes and to light for Musky’s, so I’m assuming it’s a Bass rod.

Not much of a Bass guy so I need some help, I have a extra decent reel for it, but not sure what line to use.

Rod says 20# test max, but I keep hearing 30# should work better.

If that’s correct, I think mono is going to be to stiff for throwing things like spinner baits and plastic.

Any suggestion on braids or ? line to use??

I think they were talking about braid.

Sounds like what we used for sturgeon fishing.

I use that same set up with 20lb flouro on it. THat works really well for me. I use mine for drop shotting though. I would think mono would be better for throwing spinners and stuff. THat is definately a perfect bass rod though

I was hoping to trow spinners and plastics (texas rig etc) with the same rod, that work???

I prefer mono, but isn’t the new lines more flexible in the heavier weight??

15 – 20 lb line will be fine for pitching around.

For the previous post. Drop shotting 20lb test.. Seriously?
I was on lake michigan with 6lb and hauling 5+ lb smallies into the boat..

I drop shot for big Smallies in Lake Superior and Lake Michigan with 8# flouro… Clear water Drop Shot rods have soft front sections so the bass don’t feel much resistance when sucking in the plastic bait.
I’ve noticed on IDO a wide array of comments on what drop shotting consists of…heres a good article

If you want to go with braid I’d set it up with 20 Lb. Test Power pro. I think a better set up would be with 12-17Lb. Mono. With spinnerbaits the mono will allow you a little extra time for a fish to get the bait – Often with Powe Pro your reaction time is just to fast. This setup would work great for Texas Rigging soft plastics as well – Also make a good swim jig set up.

Similar to what others said… I would either put 20-30lb. braid or 15-20lb. mono or fluoro.

If you want to go braid, Power Pro 30lb. has worked well for me in the past.

Theoretically, if you plan to fish deeper more often I would put fluoro on because it sinks, but if mostly shallow mono would work.

I have 17lb. Vicous Pro Elite fluorocarbon on a 7’mh rod right now and its working pretty well for spinners, jigs, plastics, etc.
For some really tough cheap mono, try berkely big game.

You didn’t say it was a casting rod, though I think we all assume that. Also you should mention which brand rod. There is a big difference between a GLoomis Med Heavy and a St. Croix Medium Heavy.

For spinnerbaits I think braid is the way to go, but for texas rigging mono, floro, or a hybrid will work. I think 14 to 17lb test is about right. Unless you won’t be fishing lots of weeds, then you could go down to 12.

Nothing so fancy, Berkly if I remember right, hoping to throw some wacky rigs with it….leastwises that’s the original thought..:)

Got talked into Power Pro black in 30# test at Cabela’s, he mentioned with the weeds being heavy the added strenght will help… we’ll see ehat happens.
    Thanks all.

    Just a reminder Allen…

30# Power Pro has a higher breaking point than the MedH rod does, rated for 20# mono. ( rods are labelled for mono )

Make sure the drag on your reel slips before your rod goes into a critical bend. Otherwise you could set the hook hard on a log or snag and snap that rod pretty easy with 30# braid.

    Been there…done that…

Congrats on winning the rod. 12# mono would match up good with this. could throw just about anything. 30# braid be nice too if you got some heavy cover.
I have 2 7ft md hvy. one has 12# mono, the other 30# braid. very good all around rods. I used these rods last fall throwing swimbaits and ribbits and had a blast. great for spinnerbaits. be good for jigging and worming. everything.
I’ve fished various trails over the years and at the bigger everstarts and strens, my co anglers generally used 7ft med hvy’s as the rod to bring. do it all.

I would say go with 14 lb mono. I have a 7′ MH loomis with 14 lb mono I can pretty much use it for anything. I caught a 54 inch musky on it this spring pitching a jig around some boat docks. Thats my 2 cents
