Some of the great Smallmouth we caught Thursday morning on Chequamegon Bay… 12 Bass from 16 to 21 inches. I don’t have the pic of the 21″ Toad yet as Dave has it in his camera. The hottest lure was a Terminator Swim Jig and Trigger X trailer. My two largest bass were caught on a Rapala DT Flat Rap in Hot Mustard.

Weather had been horrible for two days and no one

got out due to 4-5ft waves blowing in. Kakagon Bay turned as brown the MeKong Delta. We braved some windy, chilly conditions Thurs with 15-20 mph NE winds and air temps in the 40s off Lake Superior.

We avoided the bumper boats up shallow looking for bedded bass and drifted deeper flats with good success, using swim jigs, Senkos, and cranks.

A big thanks to my friend Capt Chris Beeksma for sharing his knowledge of this vast fishery. I’ll be back up there next week.

Do you work for the Linders or something?… Terminator, Trigger X, Rapala.
Nice job on the smallies though,I haven’t been up there for a few years. The wind can definitely get crazy, but its an awesome fishery.

No…but I like Al Linder, and use Rapala products in my guiding/fishing
My best success this young season has been on the Terminator Swim jigs and Trigger X grubs. I also like/fish Brovarny, RC and All Terrain swim jigs.

Can a guy do any good there in early August? I have have it on my short list of places to try. Any other ideas would be appreciated too! I am strictly a CPR smallie type of fisherman. Thanks, I only get to chase them about 1 week per year and my years are getting fewer.

For a place closer and is a couple hours from you Fish, try the Turkey river up by Elkader and the Volga river just south of there, in N.E. Iowa. Both rivers have a nice smallie population of good sized ones too. The Turkey river is also a good river for walleyes. If you can put together a weekend for a canoe trip, float both rivers, even one day and you’ll catch lots of smallies, especially in the Turkey. There are quite a few camp grounds in that area and loads of pretty scenery. PM me if you need help as I’ve fished both quite a bit.

I just am not much of a canoe guy. Knees just won’t take it anymore. Thanks for the tip on NE Iowa though. Would be very interested to hear whether or not Chequamegon Bay is worth going to in August though.
