Read a lot of rave reviews on these…what do you guys think about them in comparison to Gammys or Ultra Points?

I haven’t used them at all, but I think Glenn Walker might be able to help you out with this one! . Have definitely heard good things about them as well.

I bought $100 worth of them last spring Tom (less than 50 hooks) and they are JUNK. They are probably the sharpest hook ever made, but the tip of the hook will roll over easy. I am not talking on rocks or wood or what you may suspect – I am talking about the tip rolling over from the bone in the mouth of a fish. I wrote them and found out the customer service was as bad as the hook.
Let me know if you want some to try – I have about 40 left!

Unbelievably sharp! They’ve always been great for me. Some of the first ones they made had a tendency to roll over, but they say the problem has been fixed.

Replacing crank hooks? Use Matzuo hooks….they make even the Gama’s seem dull. Affordable too.

    Hard to beat Gammy

Same with the KVD Mustad Triple Grip – Gammy Trebles are very solid

The ones last spring were a bad batch and that problem has been corrected. There are no issues with the ones that are out on the market now. Last fall I could bang a hook off rocks, dock pilings, etc. and it was still sharp and no damage done.

Gregg can you forward me your e-mails from customer service and I’ll pass them along and see you get taken care of.

Definately rolled and broke more Gamakatsu hooks than I ever did a Trokar last year.

Way too expensive. $10 for a four or five pack. Gamas are great hooks at half the cost.

I’ll stick with my mustad ultra points until they fail me. I’ve used gammys and have rolled them but i have yet to roll a mustad, things are rock solid and sharp As many elite series guys that rep trokar hooks tho I’d have to think they are great hooks, just a little pricey for me

Mustad Ultra points for me. I am going to give the Trokar drop shot hooks a try this season. For the cost they better be a really great product

Thanks for the responses guys… I have no bad experiences

to pass along and its great that you can help out Kizew Glenn.

I dont fish the “heavy” cover as much as a lot of “River” guys do and lose few hooks, but I am going try a few of the Trokar EWG and DS hooks to start and will post a report.

I am BIG on stick to your skin SHARP!

I bought a couple War Eagle spinnerbaits that have Trokar hooks this spring. I didn’t really think about the hooks when I bought them. They just good looked like good spinnerbaits. Now we’ll see how the hookn’ goes!

I would really like to hear how, exactly, you do this!

I spend 80 to 100 days a year on the water…used Gamakatsu’s only for about ten years…and have never had one break. Neither a regular EWG, or a hook that’s been heated in a jighead. Had the hook points bend, but that’s rare…once, maybe twice a year.

I mostly fish heavy tackle, and set the hook a lot harder than most people would think of. Bent a hook here and there, but never had or seen one break.

I’m not trying to call you a liar or anything like that…just very curious, as i’m sure other may be as well.

It could’ve been the packs that I had, as products always have bad run’s.

But in one summer, I had numerous problems of their hook points bending after fishing around rocks and other hard structure.

Also had a few instances after using a hook for half a day that I would be unhooking a fish and would go to grab the hook out with a pliers and it would break in half. Few years ago my co angler was using a swim jig with a Gamakatsu hook and he had the hook break twice on him.

I know of many other anglers that have had similiar issues with those hooks. Other’s haven’t and use them exclusivley…it’s all what you have confidence in.

I used Gamakatsus for a summer and had a consistent problem with them bending. I’ve switched to Mustad and have never looked back! I just have the confidence they will hold up under any kind of strain or pressure you put them through.

I guess i’ve never used a hook for a half a day now that I think about it. They never last that long for me with all the toothy bastages in our lakes.

I could see them breaking on jigs. Some guys overheat their hooks when molding.

I pretty much stick with the gammy’s and have had several bend over the years, but like you say. It happens. I always carry a hook hone and keep up on the points. How many trokar’s do you get for $10

You can get the eye and the shaft, but if you want the point and the barb that costs you anywhere between $2.50 and another $10.

Speaking of hooks… Whats the best way to sharpen them?
I have never had luck sharpening them.

I just use the diamond file on my Leatherman, or a real hook hone… but I sharpen them from the outside of the shaft, opposite the barb. There’s nothing like a honed-up hook to put a serious dent in your day and hole in your finger.
