spearing decoys that aren't normal decoys

When I was watching the frozen chosen on Netflix noticed instead of a decoy like I would use for slime jacks they had what looked like wiffle balls tied together and some had aluminum foil. Has anyone ever had luck spearing with something else as a decoy than a normal fish shaped decoy? was thinking maybe I should wrap one of my decoys in aluminum foil crunched up to reflect like and make it shiny.

You could drop a cat down the hole if it looked like food.

I’ve tried with minimal results a scoop of crappie minnows in a mason jar. Knew an old timer that sweared by that trick. But after a couple hours I lost confidence and threw down a red and white next to it. I don’t know what worked after that.

interesting. would think a ball of baitfish would bring them in.

funny you say red and white. My grandpa gave me all his spearing stuff a few years ago and out 7 decoys 6 were painted red and white.

My grandpa would fish with just about anything as long as it was a red & white or black & white Daredevil.

As I age my tackle boxes are starting to be black and grey with white lures to mimic the look of minnows / bait fish or a lure that has red on it.

Yeah red and white. THE go to for just about every dark house spearer. Works in dirty water, clear water, cloudy water, you get the idea. I have about 20 decoys. Close to half of those are red/white. I don’t spear much anymore. Maybe I better get back into it this year.

I have been spearing since I was old enough to tag along…… about 30yrs ago I decided to carve a decoy and weight it, tune it, etc…. the first thing my dad told me when he saw my project was: “you should paint it white – and paint the head red”. Lol. Yes, red and white is fairly reliable…..

I have hung just about everything I could think of below a spear hole over my lifetime….. a baitfished shaped red/white decoy has proven to be reliable……
