Why in the world they allow spearing walleye is beyond me.

Mostly because it’s legal. A speared fish is a dead fish or makes the CPR a bit more challenging.

Does that count against the hooking mortality numbers?

    Why not?

I’ll bet you it’s 100x more difficult than angling under most circumstances

    100x more difficult to catch
Million times more difficult to release.

Where is this legal? This guy don’t look like he lives on the rez.
They spear sturgeon on Bago, guess I had no idea there was a spearing season on walleye?

Not every walleye is released – not a big deal. If you want to go spear walleye, knock yourself out.

    Where is this legal?

The photo caption says Mobridge Ice Fishing Tournament.
One can spear most any fish (walleye included) in Arkansas, except Bass, they love their bass.

I’m constantly amazed how many comment on these posts and it’s obvious they have haven’t read the complete post or looked at the pics that are attached.

Looks like this is in South Dakota. Have to assume legal given the post and so it is what it is.

Yes it is legal in SD. I met a scuba diver that would go out there every year to spear walleye, some people like spearing, have fun. A lot of species are speared, walleye, northern, sturgeon, if that is your thing have at it.

The guy looks happy! Why is a speared walleye such a tragedy? It’s a fish!!!

    Arkansas?

Yes, why do you ask? Real popular on Norfolk Lake. I have speared there myself while on vacation.

Is this in reference to my response? If so, what about it do you find funny?

Huntindave- No it was in response to PmB’s Arkansas. We were only a minute apart commenting and when I hit the button I hadn’t even seen your comment yet. So I thought PmB was answering after me. Things seem to move around on this site.

When you hang it on the wall do you have it mounted with the spear in it? It’d make quite the conversation piece.

Well aware of the caption, I also referenced the caption for the photo.

The discussion is about “spearing walleye” NOT ice fishing. It is legal to spear walleye in Arkansas.

Who said its a tragedy? I did not realize it’s legal unless you are on a rez.

    It’s South Dakota.

Yes the photo is From SD

    Where is this legal?

Spearing walleyes is legal in South Dakota and Arkansas. Could also be legal elsewhere.

    They have ice in Arkansas?

Don’t need ice to legally spear fish in Arkansas. The question did not ask, where will one find ice.

I believe they can also bowfish game fish in SD. I know pike for sure. Or use to be able to anyway. Not sure about eyes.

I have seen mounts with the spear in them, they are pretty cool.

In SD, Pike are able to be harvested via spear, harpoon, bow/arrow year round on the missouri river and every non-musky lake.

Gamefish can be speared/harpooned/arrowed On the Missouri River, Bitter, Waubay, Thompson, Whitewood, Albert, Henry, Dry 2, & Swan from May 1st through March 31st.

I’ve shot some walleyes & pike with my bow. It’s fun. My buddy spears crappies once in a while. Do it right and the tines go on either side of the fish and you barely scratch the meat.
