So I shouldn’t even share this, but I will lol.

My 3 year likes throw a cup corn outside well his aim isn’t the best and spills on the deck. Well I think the deer are having a hard time of finding food, cause this little guy showed up on our deck. Also a momma doe was up on the deck and yearling deer have been on our deck.

Don’t mind the celery, wife was feeding squirrels and usually the deer doesn’t touch that stuff.

Or at least it’s better than the browse alternative.

I looked at the MN DNR deer winter severity index just published (thru Feb 21) and with the exception of the arrowhead the rest of the state was still in the lowest 2 severity categories. Snow depth will cause those numbers to increase thru March but so far it hasn’t been a winter the deer can’t handle.

I’ve been putting corn out all winter. The Deer, Pheasants, Tree Rats, and Bunnies sure seem to be happy that I do. Its going to end up being a really tough year for all critters if we have normal snowfall in March

    lol

I tried the corn thing one winter. It started with a couple squirrels, which soon became a dozen. Then a mallard showed up. Inside of a week we had 200-250 mallards in the driveway at 4:30 in the morning raising heck because there was no corn out yet. I think we had every duck off the river three hundred yards behind us. 50 pounds of corn lasted two days if I was a Grinch with it. After a month I was happy to see warmer weather and a melt and a subsequent reduction in hungry friends. Never again.

Usually start in Dec end in April, we had 10 deer in the yard before but this is the first in 2 years we been at the house that deer would even dare to walk up on the deck. Talking to other people across the lake they have been having deer going through their garbage’s

I saw 20 roosters the other day digging in deep! Just their tails were sticking out. Can you imagine getting all the way down to the ground and find there’s no corn? Man it’s tough on those lil guys. I’ll be surprised to see any pheasants this spring.

Last weekend while doing some ice fishing, I could not believe how many Pleasants we saw on the roadside around lake Osakis and up near ottertail. Not sure if that is a good sign or a poor sign. I believe before this winter is over its going to take its toll on both Deer and Pheasant #’s. I’m just hoping for a lighter than average snowfall for March.

One that has always amazed is no matter how tough winter conditions are the wildlife never touch the round bales we have sitting outside.

Getting tough for sure. The deer in the metro areas I hunt are trimming any edible plants right now.

I drive the same rural area every day. The deer are out all day around here browsing.

The last week has been incredible with the turkeys. Lots of them along the rural back roads scratching where the plows have gotten down to bare ground. Lot of times they won’t move off the road. Just drive slow through them. Gotta feel for them.

I put out the corn in Outing every other weekend when we go up. I love watching the wildlife.
Last weekend I was sitting on the couch watching TV and looked over at the patio door, a grey fox was looking back. The dogs saw it and ran over to the door barking. The fox just starred at them for a few seconds and slowly walked away. Very cool.
