Its apple season. Just wanted to shout out for Afton Orchard. I took my yearly trip there yesterday to pick up what I consider the best apple donuts in the world. I tend to steer clear of sweets now, but I make an exception for these.
Their cider is spot on too. They should have videoed me in the parking lot eating a donut and swigging cider from a half gallon jug before hitting the road!

You are the second person today that has said something about their apple donuts. They sound great.

I really miss a similar spot that we used to go to every Fall. All the farms in the area were open for apples, crafts and baked goods. I can still taste the apple fritters from Boa Vista Farms. I wish that we had something like that where we are now.

We usually go to La Crescent for apples from orchards. The local orchards there have one called a “La Crescent”, a U of M bred apple, that’s about as good as an apple can get. Right off the tree they are hard and crispy and sweet. Let them set a couple weeks on the counter top and they soften a tad and are great for pies and sauce. The La Crescent variety of apple is an early one and as a rule by early to mid September they are gone. We generally make our run there in late August.

Lake City’s orchards see us several times during the fall when we pick up cider and other apples. Orchards are one of my favorite places to visit. The smell of apples everywhere is just plain nice.

My apple trees were pathetic this year. Might need to do a road trip to a orchard. A good apple pie sounds good.

We’ve had apple pie on the table for about two weeks straight now. I don’t think a person can get too much apple pie.

Pies are always good. It’s funny that as I age I really enjoy a good pie crust. When younger I never really paid any attention I guess.

My favorite apple is an older variety called Fireside. not many orchards have them. But some of the older ones do. they are a late fall apple best after a frost. their flavor has been described as pear like. always crisp and sweet. give them a try if you can find them. my parents have a tree that was planted when i was a child, a looong time ago, still bearing fruit.
