My 60hp Mercury takes spark Champion plug #RA8HC gaped at .040. The parts store didn’t have 4 so I bought 4 of the NGK equivalent #DCPR7E. Would the gap be the same .040? Thank you for any help.

I’ve never gapped a spark plug in my life – just took them out of the box and ran em. My hunting trucks gap was like 1/2 an inch , the electrode wasn’t even bent anymore .

I’ve gapped thousands of spark plugs. Also found some new ones with no gap where the electrode was pinched tight closed. doah

I have not gapped 1000+ grin but gapping the spark plug is about the easiest thing to do and the tool is quite cheap. If you spend the time to change plugs yourself I am not sure why you would not spend the 5 seconds to check the gap.

I have 2 Honda generators that had a little surging at idle. There were many YouTube videos with various fixes. I found one where opening up the plug gap fixed the issue so I tied that with mine and the idle is better now. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the difference and like mentioned it’s not hard and takes less than a minute to do.

The gap in my question was .040, all the plugs I bought in the box were about .030. That’s enough to make the 5 Mn it took to check them worthwhile.

I had to look at the book again to be sure it was .040. The new plugs as I said all came at .030 and the old plugs I took out were all at .030, I went by the book but still wonder a little if it was right.
