A buddy is renting an apt in So Padre Island in January. Got invited down for a few days. He even is dragging his boat down there. Id guess sea trout, red fish, and sheep head. Seems like I normally see fisherman using spinning reels while fishing. Can a guy use baitcasters, too? I kinda prefer those. Thanks for any info. Sam

The bay can have really good fishing. We usually fish right agains the docks with a heavy dropshot setup with live shrimp. The guides with the bay boats go all over. The bay is very very shallow in places so, we never venture out to the middle just in case. It can also get foggy often. If you fish near the area by the coast guard atation, you can usually see dolpins, which is really cool. Also, the bay is super salty, so be ready to rinse out the motor after each outing.

I go to Joe’s Fish Market for all my seafood needs when down that way. Easier then trying to find fish. I surf fished off the island and fished the bay, both with minimal luck.

My wife and I usually go out on launches from Louie’s. We’ve caught quite a few whitings on the launches.
Most people use spinning gear but I’ve used my own baitcaster on charters and have seen others fishing with them.
Steven is right that it’s hard to beat the seafood at Joe’s. It’s served on paper plates with plastic utensils but the Nate’s special is a great meal.

I always get a pound of grilled shrimp and the coleslaw. I tried their seafood soup last year and it was the bomb, give it a try for a light lunch.
