South Dakota Self Guided Hunt

Does anybody have a recommendation of a place where I could take a small group of guys for a self guided pheasant hunt in South Dakota that is reasonably priced? I would prefer to hunt with a small group with our own dogs. I am open to a place that has lodging or someplace that you can just hunt and stay at a hotel. We have hunted public land in South Dakota for years and it seems to get tougher every year and the birds are very educated after the first few weeks of the year.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Give Dakota Hot Spots in Kennebec a call. I’ve been going there one day a year for the last 5 years. We always cap off our public land hunting trip with one day on private land at Dakota Hot Spots. Pretty awesome way to end a trip. We don’t do the lodging – just a day hunt.

I am in the same boat. 10 years ago we could put in reasonable effort knocking on doors and gain permission. Toss the farmer a few bucks. Mix in some public land and we always had a good time even if we didn’t limit out every day.

It gradually got tougher and tougher and we could barely gain any private access. The farms were getting leased by operations. And public land got really tough.

I looked into this U Guide service in South Dakota. Looks cool, but very expensive. I am not into the big ranches, hunting with strangers, or shooting pen raised birds.

I might have to look into Dakota Hot Spots also.

Come out after east river rifle season is over and we’ve had some cold weather. Access is a little easier and it’s easier to pinpoint concentrations of birds, as they will have started grouping up around the thicker cover by then.

Highly recommend against Uguide….had a terrible experience, mid-Nov 2019….3 days, 6 experienced guns, 6 experienced dogs….took home a total of 8 birds. Rented land had a very few habitat acres and was over-hunted. Was really an expensive disappointment!
