Here’s a good little piece I think people here will like to argue about. I just googled a random article for this, I think I originally saw it on my Facebook feed, but was not going to engage those people. My only comment is when I caught a little sucker shooting Smallmouth with a bow here in MN I let him know exactly how stupid I thought he was, even for a 12 year old. My question is are Browns even a native species to SD and if they are stocked does that make a difference in how you should be able to take them?

Brown trout are not native anywhere in the US. Brown trout were introduced from Europe to all inland waters where they currently reside.

There may or may not have been native sea-run brown trout in the northeastern US, but if they existed at all, they are long gone.

Apparently trout are not special in SD. First time I have heard of them being legal to shoot. Nice looking fish.

What’s to argue about? He legally (it appears) harvested a state record fish, congratulations are in order!

“I didn’t know this was a thing, or even ethical or legal,” one follower chimed in

And now that person knows lol. Related topic, anyone else see the idaho fisheries and wildlife article about walleye? They want all walleyes that are caught in trout rivers to be killed immediately… thinking about taking a trip to Idaho, told my wife I might be gone for a month or two as my fellow countrymen need my help eradicating the walleye menace!

That’s not anything new. Contrary to popular belief, there are some parts of the country that do not value walleyes. The pacific northwest is one of those areas. The top game fish there are trouts/salmons. Some of those rivers also have an increasing popuation of untouched smallmouth bass and they view them in the same manner: a threat to their beloved trout and salmon.

It makes sense, it’s just funny to think about. I’m seriously considering going to do my part to help Idahoans realize their dreams of a walleye-less river system

Columbia River, WA/OR have no limit on walleye caught. There are/where many lakes in WA which have bounties on Walleye. Last time I was there it was something like $5/head.

I’ve fished the Columbia dozens of times, and the average walleye caught would even make Lake Erie/Detroit River walleye blush with envy. Average fish over 6lbs and many fish over 10lbs. Your typical best bag(5 fish) in a day will be over 50lbs. We also fished by a guy that caught a 16 and 17lbs fish in the same day.

They are widely considered a trash fish.

The whole state is interesting. We also fished Lake Chelan, and the homeowners(many muti-million dollar homes) on the lake convinced the state to put a bounty on Lake Trout. We did a “study” with the DNR and caught a crapload of Lakers. Some of the most fun fishing I’ve ever had.

“Absolute [waste] of a trophy trout, no records broken only a giant lost,” reads the top facebook jealous flyfishing comment, which garnered more than 600 reactions.

    Fixed it…

Because it’s not on his wall. Not saying he wouldn’t have released it, but you hear it across all fish and game records it seems…

The guy did everything legally so no issue. I always found it interesting that SD allows spearing and archery shooting of fish that this state would never consider, but if they are following the laws have at er! They have far fewer anglers than we do they cannot possibly do more damage than the tens of thousands that flood Red Lake, LOW in their wheel houses (which are also legal).

Have absolutely no issue with the guy for shooting a giant brown. At the same time I think it’s dumb that’s legal. Just like I think it’s dumb you can shoot fish like buffalo, gar, bowfin, etc. in Minnesota. Have at the Carp or whatever other invasives

I’m very interested in underwater spearfishing. I have a co-worker that does it (mostly in salt water) and it sounds awesome. I don’t understand the hatred for it that some people have. Seems like it takes a lot more skill and effort than normal fishing, and if you’re going to keep and eat a walleye anyways what difference does it make how you get it?
It is legal in some bodies of water here in ND (Sak, Devils, etc.), so definitely wanting to try it. Some species are off limits like muskie, smallmouth bass, paddlefish. I’ve heard smallmouth are not shy at all and come right up to you. So I guess I can see why you can’t target them.

Interesting. When I was young we used to stock brown trout in our local pond and creeks. Then we called them German Browns.

tom Skerrett and brad pit are going to be very upset to hear about this

how hilarious i like to picture a crowded stream of fly fishermen with the waders and the little wicker baskets then this guy rolls up on his atv blaring skynard and drinkin beer walks up to them and just shwacks this giant brown from the stream i think the reason its so funny is because how snooty fly fishing culture has gotten
