I am looking to purchase a 10+ inch screen come spring time. It’s a big decision and I want to make the right one…….. I am considering an HDS-10 or ONIX-10. What are the pros/cons of each? Or, would I be better off with an 1199 for the $$?

It’s a Ford vs Chevy question. Whatever a person has is what they prefer.

    I’m ‘Bird guy.

yep… It’s been beat to death.. I have (2) ‘birds (899 & 798) and like them. I know both companies make good units. I have only used Humminbird and have no experience with Lowrance.

If I was getting ready for next spring I would be looking at the touch units from Lowrance. I have heard a ton of great reports about these units. I have the HDS8 & 7 Gen 1 & 2 and they have been horrible when I first got them in 2009 but the last two years they have been flawless.

I was a Lowrance guy for better then 30 years got real tired of them not supporting there legacy units. Run HBirds now and if you look on HBirds web sight they still repair legacy units that are over 10 years old……Just a thought.

Each manufacturer has there issues seen both the new Lows touch and the Hbirds can have some issues. I use my SI more then anything else Hbird has the best SI Low has the best DI in there combo SI DI units straight DI units are a wash.

If you ever considered using or getting 360 then the choice is already made for you.

I am a little frustrated with my 899 combo… I bought the unit brand new back in May of this year, and I have had to restore default settings three times already — Seems like I get it dialed in to the water I am fishing, and a few weeks later it goes ballistic and becomes unusuable…….my 3 year old 798 combo has been spectacular. In fact, I like it far more than my 899.

I’ve been a Lowrance guy forever but I’ve had quite a bit of experience with Humminbird. James has birds rigged on his boat and I can offer my personal opinion.

The sonar on the birds is well…not so good. And by not so good I mean awful. In talking with the techs at SBC they say it is vastly improved with the Onix units.

I don’t know what exactly the problem was but I had Onix units go completely AWOL when I was out fishing…it would make me a touch nervous to sink a bunch of money into it.
I have only had the opportunity to play with the new onix units a handful of times out while we were fishing and struggled with the user interface. It seemed quite dense and convoluted as compared to the Lowrance and previous versions of the bird even being well versed in the old humminbird (2014) units.

They say the side imaging is excellent on the new units.

If you’re a guy who likes to use side imaging a lot I wouldn’t shy away from the Onix. Also, she’s slow as a dog. All the way from starting up the unit (3min) to loading and navigating screens.

Personally, I would continue to run with the HDS hands down! Rock solid sonar and easy interface. The down scan and side scan are no slouches either. It’s just a tried and true system.

@Ben Brettingen – I purchased an HDS-9 GEN 2T w/ LSS-2 a couple weeks ago and I have been happy with it. Very crisp display.
