After taking the little man out last year during firearms season for his first time hunting and having a great time I figured it would be hard to top this year for his first youth hunt.
Last year he just missed the age cut off for the youth hunt so he had to brave the cold for the regular 9 day gun season. He did excellent with not only dealing with the weather but was also able to put down his very first deer, a mature doe and followed it up 10 minutes later with a great 8 pointer. To say we were both excited would be an understatement.
I spent much of the off season and early season trying to explain that hunting isn’t always as easy at the first night you go out you shoot a doe and a buck. He took to that very well and we were set for this years youth hunt.
We decided to sit over a small food plot deeper into the woods rather than on the woodline of the bigger ag fields. The first day came and went with a few does, a spike and a smaller 6 pointer that he decided he wanted to pass on in order to shoot a more mature buck.
The final day of our hunt came and he decided that our venison stash was getting too low and he would harvest a doe to stock the freezer back up if we had the chance. He was able to do so with a very well placed shot on her and she only went about 40 yards.
Could not be more proud of the hunter he has become and the excellent shot that he is. 3 shots, 3 deer, and all 3 were double lung shots!!

Looking forward to what the regular gun season brings us this year!!!

Very cool Eric! Someday He’ll tell his kids about the time “Grandpa” took him on his first trip.

Very Nice! He’s already a more accomplished hunter than me! Course I spend too much time around the campfire drinking cocktails well into the night. He has a way to go before he bests me on that front toast

Fantastic! Sounds like you have taught him well. Thanks for helping to preserve a proud tradition.
