Something you don't see everyday

I thought I would share with everyone something you don’t see very often. These fish were caught in Idaho while I was there going to college. These are NOT golden trout as I have caught those as well. These are called Banana trout. I believe I heard somewhere that they are a sterile cross between an albino rainbow and a steel head which is why they grow so big. The biggest one that I got was only 26 3/4″ long but weighed 13.2 pounds, he happened to make his way to the taxidermist. To date that is the biggest fish I have ever gotten on a 5wt. Just thought you guys would enjoy seeing these.

Wow… that’s a very cool fish! I can see how they get their name. So much for natural camo!

One question… can you get them through the ice?

James it is possible to get them through the ice although I have not done it. You can imagine how easy they are to sight fish so a lot of them get taken out fairly quickly. Also for some reason I have noticed that Idaho anglers are always out to get their limit of fish so they don’t release very many. I always release anything I wont eat that day or the off chance I get one mounted. But due to this I don’t think very many of them make it to the winter although I have already seen reports of them being caught through the ice this year outside of Burley over on iceshanty. If you want more info on these unique fish hit me up I’d be glad to help out if I can.

I’d never heard of them either, and I’ve fly fished for the majority of my life. A good portion of that has been spent chasing after trout. I wonder what the difference between a Palomino and a Banana trout is?

    Pretty cool either way. Thanks!

Edit – Nevermind, after reading your post a bit more thoroughly, I see that the Banana is a sterile hybrid. I believe Palominos are just rainbows w/ a mutated pigment gene.

Very Unique fish for sure. The color of those fish is awesome, they almost don’t look real. The closes I have ever seen a color like that would have been in a gold fish bowl. THANKS for SHAREING those Pics. … rrr
