After 70 years of people enjoying the attributes of this river a few people took upon themselves to alter the course of a community. Saw this coming after the Stillwater bridge was built. Urban sprawl wins out again.

That’s really sad. I wonder how many jobs will be lost because of this. More than a couple of local non-tubing related businesses are going to go TU I’m sure after this. I had lunch today at the Sportsman’s Bar, had no idea at the time. I wish I had, I would have asked them what they thought of that.

We used to camp and tube out there with the whole extended family when I was a kid. like 8 tents packed to the gills, a whole picnic table lined up with Coleman stoves. All the cousins roaming the campground on bmx and banana seat bikes. Lot of memories.
Took my kids (10 and 12) for their first float last summer and it really seemed like time had stood still.
But don’t worry, once the USACE has the locks removed you can hop over to pool 1 and tube the white water with the rest of us citiots.
August 20, 2019 at 8:27 pm #1874746Times change. Memories will still be there. Sadly I move to get away from the poop but it follows me. Tell me where you live and I will stay away. Nope not a good idea.
August 20, 2019 at 8:31 pm #1874748Oh no we used to go tubing down the apple alot when I was younger. I have a few buddies who go often still. They do make it sound much more adult themed then when I was there. But I will hold the memories of being a kid
August 20, 2019 at 9:02 pm #1874758Sad times…. we used to camp at The Apple River campground every summer, about 15 of us… when they got rid of the can targets along shore, we started floating with kegs… ahhhhhh…..the good old days. And the free limo rides….
August 20, 2019 at 9:30 pm #1874760Doesn’t sound like it’s over yet. From the story I read there is likely going to be a lawsuit.

Posts: 300August 20, 2019 at 9:44 pm #1874763The only way to fix this stupidity is to stop voting for people that vote like California. (eg. San Francisco) That’s why this is shut down.

I’m sure some snow flake on this site will get butt hurt from my comment. For those that do, Is there a Crying room on this forum? Maybe PlayDoe for you? Perhaps a Puppy to Pet?
August 20, 2019 at 9:44 pm #1874764Hopefully Munchy. Though I think some saw the works at hand and are taking the opportunity presented to them. I don’t blame them. It’s change.

InactivePosts: 2218August 20, 2019 at 9:50 pm #1874769There were probably too many plastic straws in the river. Could they possibly set up a checkpoint and monitor the straws?

Posts: 300August 20, 2019 at 11:11 pm #1874789Do I fix it with no assurance that it will be fixed. I’m leaning towards live it out to the end.
August 21, 2019 at 7:37 am #1874810Tubing isn’t going to end in Somerset, this just closes the Park as an exit point. Most likely this will shut down 1 possibly 2 of the 4 tubing businesses.
August 21, 2019 at 8:07 am #1874817When I was young and in Boyscouts, we used to have a father/son day there…Until one of the moms decided she wanted to see why the dads and boys enjoyed the apple river so much…then the fun stopped…
Saw my first set of bolt-ons in that river when I was 11. Can confirm, they were nice.
August 21, 2019 at 8:53 am #1874825They dump in at rivers edge. All they have to do is work it out to pull out at float rite or apple river campground and then they don’t need to use the park. The business’ just need to work together a bit and it will be fine.

That, right there, made my day.

I know Hideaway and Float Rite used to have an agreement where the hideaway tubers could take out and be picked up at FR. I don’t know when or why that went sour.
It comes down to money I’m sure. Pay them enough and FR will probably welcome them back.
August 21, 2019 at 10:08 am #1874855Float Rite and Hideaway will probably never work together again, this whole situation is more than likely a result of the current situation between the two owners.
August 21, 2019 at 12:30 pm #1874893Most of you must of read a different article then I did. They are not putting a stop to tubing they are not letting a business use a public park for the exit. I wish they would do the same for country camping on the rum. The busses tie up the boat landing most of the day throughout the summer.

They’re not, they are closing an exit point.

Posts: 1302August 21, 2019 at 3:48 pm #1874951God knows we can’t have a legal activity on private land with out someone complaining and trying to shut it down. the stickler is the park, being public and maintained by the city.
After watching the news, looks to me the tuber’s brought it on to themselves by just being offensive in general, trash, language, ect.
