Alright so Im looking to buy a fish finder I can use ALL YEAR round, on my boat during summer and for ICE FISHING! I would love some input on what to look at. Im not looking to break the bank also. I was looking at Lowrance 4x’s. Then I came across multiple different models of the 4x including DSI, HDI, and CHIRP. I cant figure out whats what!! Can I fish these models all year? I know someone on here knows a hell of alot more than I do, and would GREATLY appreciate some help. Thanks fellas! FISH ON!

The lowrance elite series are good units and will do what you are looking for. I would suggest upsizing to the elite 5, as the screen is a little bigger. the chirp units are new and I don’t know anything about them. I have a elite7 with di(down imaging) and use that feature alot while trolling. I think you are looking to buy something to use this ice fishing season, but if you wait until the spring sales start, you may find a better deal.

Portable Humminbird 386ci… you get GPS, compatible with Lakemaster, lots of good features. Probably want to get the ice-transducer and the open water one. I love mine… small screen but I love the portability. You can choose between the traditional flasher screen and the sonar screen too. Just an idea… I haven’t used any of the Lowrance models so I don’t know how they compare but I’ve been happy with the Humminbird so far and I’ve had it for 3 years.

When it comes to dual units (I wouldn’t necessarily agree on the ICE units) Humminbird normally has better service, and will stand behind their product than Lowrance. I had an X67c and it was great though (full disclosure)

The 386ci is a really nice unit as youngfry noted – Lakemaster, Ice Option, and the graph is sweet. I’m really debating grabbing one even though I only do 1 open water trip a year to the BWCA. Would be nice to target Lakers with my own graph in 60FOW
