During the last few weeks of July, we saw the typical tough mid-summer reaction type bite, and 80 degree water stuff. Then we got dumped on with 8 inches of rain, the water cooled down a bit, and things really changed out here. Fishing pressure for walleyes has been pretty light, and the fishing has been pretty darn good overall.
We are seeing nicer schools of 15″-20″ walleyes on the shallower 7′-10′ flats, and a decent amount of bigger fish coming to the net near the shoreline breaks and structure in the 12′-25′ range. Crankbaits have taken a back seat once again to jigs and rigs with leeches, night crawlers and fathead minnows.
Muskie fishing pressure seems to be up, with quite a few fish having been boated recently. Overall the muskie bite has been hit-or-miss, but if you put your time in you can score a few really nice fish this month.
In addition, the larger perch seem to be showing up in the shallower areas about a month early this year which makes things fun when we are chasing walleyes.
Cheers and hook-sets!
