Sold my boat, so now the shopping starts!

I sold my 18′ Lund Alaskan tiller a lot faster than I anticipated, here in Southern Ontario.

Anyways, now I need to find a boat for the spring. I had my heart set on either a Skeeter WX2060, Warrior V208 or a V2090. These boats are over $90,000 here actually closer to $100,000. I knew this because I’ve been druelling over big walleye boats for years and just excepted that if I wanted one I had to carry a loan. Thought I was OK with it, but now that’s it is a reality I’m not as comfortable with the idea. I like the idea of being debt free )

Also, I believe our government has a 10% tariff on new & used boats being imported to Canada from the US. I miss understood, I thought the tariff was on aluminum and steel products only.. UGH!! With our dollar at where it is and a 10% tariff, it’s just not feasible (

So I guess my long winded question is, if you were going to look at an older used boat, in the 18′ – 20′ range, what would you consider. I’m thinking the top 3 still Skeeter, Warrior, Ranger. Maybe find a really well taken care of hull and re-power?

My goal is to have a boat that’s at least as comfortable as my Alaskan was and be able to store 8′ 1 piece trolling rods.

Also, if this is going to be our interim boat I’m cool with aluminum as well.

Bet you’ll wish you had 10 of those Alaskans to sell. Around here they seldom lose much value and a well-maintained Alaskan is always in demand.

One thing that has always bugged me about NAFTA or whatever El Presidente has rebranded NAFTA 1.1 as, is that free trade should apply to individuals and not just businesses.

Yes, the Trump Tariffs have been attracted retaliation that is going to be hell on the boat industry down here. Canada was a big customer. I’ll be interested to hear what you find up there now. I have a feeling used boat prices will skyrocket.

If you keep your eyes open and move fast there are good deals to be had. You just have to be ready and willing to almost buy the boat sight unseen. You have to expect some wear and that things probably won’t be exactly how you would have ordered it.

I have a 2007 Ranger 620T with 150 Yamaha and T8 Yamaha kicker. I love it but there were a few scratches here and there and a couple other minor issues that bug a guy but when she’s all shined up IMO it’s a very nice boat. More importantly it fishes the same as a 75K boat at half the price.

Good luck shopping, it’s fun yet frustrating. It took me 4 years to find this one and I’ve been shopping for an upgrade for the past 3 years with no luck! My next one may be a new Warrior but I haven’t decided yet.

If you are looking fiberglass, look for the Triton Fishunter also. My dream boat of choice. May be a bit harder to find, but as long as you are looking used, may as well search on it.

Congratulations on the sale Greg ! Ironic to me that several years ago, I too sold my Alaskan in Ontario by accident on the way home from a fishing trip !

I believe first & foremost when buying used, who, what, where, & how did the boat get used. The very best brands can be mis used and not meet your expectations. For some folks, having someone stand behind what they sell used has value. There are great used boats out there, but it sure helps if you can buy from someone you know a have a full blown inspection to minimize unforeseen surprises.

Thanks Guys! I just totally didn’t anticipate the tariff thing and am too good of guy to back out of the sale. The buyer absolutely loves my Alaskan. I’d hate to see a grown man cry HAHA!

I figure I should be able to find something over the winter. If I could find a good hull, maybe I could re-power with a reliable newer motor. That would allow me to save my allowance until I can put a 50-60% deposit down on a new 20 footer to retire in!!

Hey Greg, I just came across this post. I happen to have a used 2090 for sale if you are interested. It is 20 years old, 1998, but it still is in good shape for the age. I am asking $9,500 and it has a 1998 125 HP Mariner outboard. If you are interested in hearing more about it let me know. I just bought a new 2090 so I really don’t need both in the garage right now.

Hi Dustin, I’ve actually checked your boat out. Very NICE! Thanks for letting me know. We are making a switch to a wheel boat, otherwise I would have jumped on yours )
