Has anyone gone cold turkey on sodium? Concerns?

Been fasting on & off, went cold turkey on sodium, any sugar, all carbs a month ago..
all my blood results should come back very low when I see my Dr next week, concerned about no sodium as the body needs some.

Then why did you go no sodium if your concerned about not having it?

Sodium is a big no no in having cirrhosis.

You are more likely to suffer from carb cravings than salt

when i first started doing yearly physicals the docs gave me crap about my blood pressure and told me to cut back on sodium/salt. i did by 2/3, it helped but not completely. some sodium is needed in your body. the carb thing, yea i take meds for it after my bypass. yes i watch what i eat close but it doesnt go away.

i’ve been told by more docs and nurses alot of health issues later in life is hereditary, best you can do is try and control what you put in your body!!!

The body needs some salts and it looks like you can get sodium deficient.

Hyponatremia is a condition that occurs when the sodium in your blood falls below the normal range of 135–145 mEq/L. In severe cases, low sodium levels in the body can lead to muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Eventually, lack of salt can lead to shock, coma and death.

I believe meats tend to have sodium in them. May not be a good move to go full veggie with no salt.

Zero meat, at all. I do get some salt, not much.. at 6’4” went in to the hospital at 340lbs, I’m around 240 now, don’t really want to get below 200. I’ll say seeing my Dr every 1.5 months gets old.

People need salt so you cannot eliminate it entirely just like fat.

The old joke in medicine is the orthopedic surgeons prescribe salt tablets for low sodium.

High or low sodium is a water problem, not a salt problem. Too much or too little fluid. Unless you’re sick or have kidney failure your sodium will be fine.

Well I went to my doc today. Went through testing again, he found my sodium level was well under what it should be, was concerned. Has me now cutting my fluid meds in half. Yes, a big portion is fluids, cut my electrolyte fluids in half, even though I’m down to 2 bottles of water, now 1. Long road ahead for me, going in to a liver doc for further testing, he said I’m day to day being alive. I’ll likely be living in the hospital again going through doc after doc, it’s life after living in a bottle.

I’ll be having a fav cigar & celebrating being alive applause

A hard road for you. Yes we all need to celebrate and appreciate the gift of another day, this lesson was driven home to me a year ago this very day. I will add you to my prayers.

I was told to cut my salt as I used to pour it on. After several years of cutting it out. I had a blood test and they said you need to eat more salt. We hardly ever eat canned goods, and I only added a slight sprinkle to something once or twice a week. Bad thing after a few years of not eating it, it tastes like crap. Started eating salted tortilla chips. Seems to be the perfect amount.

Was getting easier to go less & less salt, probably cause I quit eating any meat, pasta, bread, potatoes, anything processed.. unfortunately I took it to a new level & my doc didn’t like it, to the point of trying to get me to the ER after leaving his room. The cost of living in the hospital is unreal, my 1st stay of a month & a half was 5k per night.. I did agree to go in & see a liver specialist, soon, and go from there.

Just an update, kinda bored today.

I’ve seen my doc 3 times since my last post, seems I’m becoming a hospital veteran.

I’ll be admitted to my 2nd home next week having several procedures done & seeing a liver specialist. My doc recommended a liver transplant today & I stopped him. I’ve chosen to go with what I’ve got & accept living or dying with it, regardless if it lasts a week or longer.

Bless you for sharing Wallyhntr1. My father passed away 3 years ago due to alcohol related issues and this is another good reminder to take care of the body. Sounds like you have a good attitude and accepted it. Hang in there and God bless.

Dang you wallyhntr!! Ya can’t give up yet!! We have too much bantering between us to do yet and we’ve barely begun!!
Look, I know where you are at, been there a couple of times in my life,in Sept of 03 I was given 6 weeks to live after liver failure thanks to chronic exposure to ag chemicals.
1 year ago this month I walked away from a plane crash with more injuries than I care to count.
In all honesty I should of been dead no less than 5 times in my life and somehow someway I rise from the ashes.

I understand you and your decision, probably more than you know,I understand the bills, the recovery time, all of it, but dang it if a transplant will give you a few more years with family and us bunch of rascals i think it would be worth it.

Either way dear friend, you are in my prayers daily and even more so now.

    Thank you.

Was very hard to sell my Ranger last year due to this, it was named the rocket ship.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done is having the ‘talk’ with my daughter. Needed to set her up with my plan & my acceptance of living or dying with what I have.

Found a picture of my rocket ship I had to sell…. Was on Birch lake doing a walleye shore lunch.. I actually gifted the boat to my stepsons, they grew up with it & knew they’d use it & have, a lot.

I won’t preach, yet it’s a definite thing to consider & possibly a good idea to have simple blood work tested for signs.

Today was an experience! Went to the hospital for a battery of tests, and removal of fluid from my tummy, hurt like a biotch! Then testing started & was beyond nervous as it came with cancer testing, doc says cancer & cirrhosis can go hand in hand. Technology these days is amazing, they had several blood test results before I got home.

My numbers came in almost spot on, my sodium came up to near normal & all other numbers are great! I’ve no liver mass. They also dropped the cancer screening unless my personal doc wants it.

Far from being out of the woods but it’s looking like I’ll be around longer than thought. Now I can put the boots to wrong way rotflol

    That’s good news.
I’m not trying to change your mind, just providing information. A transplant is definitely a challenge. My cousin who is around 70 had a liver transplant at least 20 years ago, probably longer. He’s doing well.
