Is 1000 hours a lot of hours on a 4 stroke Yamaha motor thats 16 years old? Thats about 62 hours a year, doesn’t really seem excessive to me. I’ll add it is 115 hp on a tiller boat if that would matter.

Opinions from the experts please. grin

Friend runs a number of 4 strokes for his business. He says that at about 1500 hours they get a bit expensive. He is not exclusive to Yamaha, so I would say that it is a very general comment.

There are many 4-stroke outboards with over 6000 hours that run fine.
That said, it is a good idea to have a mechanic check out any used motor before you buy.

I am not an SME (subject matter expert) but I have a 40 hp 4 stk Yamaha about 14 years old with about 1,000 hrs on it. Seems to run like new and never had an issue with it.

I called a Yamaha dealer once and asked about preventative maintenance. They said at about 1,500 hrs I may want my valves checked/adjusted.

If taken care of, those Yamahas run forever.

Traded in my 60hp Yamaha 4 stroke last spring 10 yrs old 1800hrs. Was still running great but I wanted efi. Regular maintenance motor never caused me a problem.

The short answer is No. The longer answer needs more information about those 1000 hours, wide open or mostly trolling hours? Proper maintenance as far as fluid changes?

2 biggest factors would be where those 1000 hours are and also how was maintenance.

My best guess being a 115 tiller is that over half of those hours will be at 1000 rpm or less which is basically at idle. If that’s the case there isn’t much to get concerned about, mostly plugs and maybe cleaning out the fuel system.

As long as the regular maintenance was done I wouldn’t hesitate one bit.

Having a Yamaha mechanic take a look at it should be able to tell you if anything is needed currently and if anything looks like its on its way out.
