Pretty common to see that around some of the deeper holes. At times they get so thick the depth finder wont read through them. Ive dropped a camera in those schools a few times. never know what they are gooing to be but most of the time its some sort of rough fish. Buffalo, carp, sheep head. channel cats. Not uncommon to see a few walleyes or saugers mixed in with them.

I have been out about five times this spring so far (with little success) and only seeing few fish caught from boats around me. I have searched many areas. I too get fooled by large groups of marks like that, but they are mostly all rough fish. When the water temps hit 40 and some back water area hit 42, I went searching to see if I could find anything in shallower water in the sand/gravel areas away from the main channel and the little current we have; hoping to find staging males or even some females that have an early itch to dump their load.

I took a photo of this school and had hestitantly high hope, but after working the area and snagging two carp, I was out of there. Sure there could be an eye mixed in, but doubtful. The second pic of four solo fish had me thinking that these could be some eyes as I could mark a couple here, one there, a few there, ranging from around 8-14fow off them main channel. I would think that these would be eyes, but as none were eager to jump onto my hooks, I could not verify. I had no meat that day, so I will go back and toss/drag something with protein for them….

was this left of the ” Y ” in the lock channel ? We found fish so thick we were hooking them jigging. Big quarter sized scales = not eyes

Haha these were all spoonbills, we had just hooked up with a walleye and drifted off of our line into a deep hole. I about crapped when I seen the graph dropped down just to make sure because if I wouldn’t have I would never have been able to get it off my mind. About 10 seconds after I dropped down it was game on! Felt like I had hooked a log. I was actually pretty surprised to see it was a spoonie when I got it to the surface, I thought for sure they’d be sheephead.
