Snow?

Our local 5PM weekend weather just suggested that we could see up to 12″ of snow next weekend. I sure hope that the weather forecaster was drunk at news time and mis-read something.

Up to means just that. They say it to pull viewers in. I take network weather with a grain of salt.

WUnderground is saying 1-3” for Rochester. 1” for the cities.

I’d take internet weather with a block of salt then. 100% computer generated and changes by the minute.

Where do you think Dave, Sven, and Belinda get their information? They certainly don’t do manual calculations anymore. Anywhere you look weather is 100% computer generated. The TV personalities will say the one extreme model (up to 12”) when they know it’s most likely 1-3”, just to gain viewers each newscast that week.

They use multiple weather models and get to highlight the one or more the believe in. The internet weather Is stuck with one.

I totally agree that some networks exaggerate the forecasts for ratings. If you were to watch them all, certain networks will always be nearer the extremes when you look past 3 days. Then you get to work the next day and talk about what Dave Dahl said last night.

The nice things some networks do is generalize the 5-7 day forecasts and simply say some models are hinting at significant snowfall.

If I were to guess, ABC was the network predicting 12″.

I’m pretty certain the internet weather looks at a dozen or so models, takes out the extremes, and gives an overview of the others. Just like the networks are SUPPOSED to do as well. I’ve never had an issue with the WUnderground app and it’s typically fairly accurate up to 3 days out.

I use weather underground as well but I’ve noticed that it’s predictions are identical to weather channel and weather bug. I use weather underground because they use graphs which gives a better perspective on the overall weather trend.

You can always bet when nighttime lows increase, moisture is moving in.

Tom, is this KTTC? The new weather person can’t read the teleprompter very well. Probably means we’ll get 21″. )

I believe weather underground and weather channel have merged or are at least partners. They use the same forecasts, however weather underground also uses data from personal weather stations.

Models are fun to look at if weather is your hobby. I wish I knew about the site tropical tidbits. They organize the major weather models in an interface you can animate and scroll through. I saw this weather coming about a week ago.

I’ll cut em some slack on the snow. But for the love of god, is it too much to ask to come within 10 mph on the wind forecast?

Seems like evenings I’ll double check the wind forecast before heading out in the a.m. – and then deciding where to go – and once I’m out on the water on my little ole tin boat all of a sudden the “light and variable” have become 15 to 20 mph.

    Sigh.

    Ok. I digress.

    Back to snow forecasting.

LOL I guess I am not the only one that deals with that lol. 20mph winds with a 14′ boat with a 9.9hp can be fun days.

I agree with Jewllsy… http://www.nws.noaa.gov is the source for all of the weather, period. But there are other aspects of other apps that I usually sneak off to that give me one thing or another from a forecast perspective, be it just radar or some other reading that I’d like (wind, barometric pressure, etc.).

I have seen no reports for snowfall other than in Washington state where if I was reading correctly they were calling for 186″ of snow over 4 days…

European models have us getting the big snowfall and for some odd reason it seems they have been pretty accurate lately.

But I love Belinda, so what ever she says is what I’m going with.

All the Twin Cities TV forecasts suck. They change them every broadcast and they are impossibly vague and use huge ranges to weasel out of making any predictions that could be later seen as “wrong”.

Deadeye Dave Dahl couldn’t accurately forecast yesterday’s weather.

    I, too, use Weather Underground.

I pretty much just look at the radar forecasts the day before. Anything beyond that is useless, most of the apps can’t even get the current weather right! And if you’re going to Mille Lacs, add 5-10 mph to any wind forecast or current report.

    Where are you seeing this?

When it comes to Hurricanes and tropical models they say the Euro is the most accurate. However, unlike the GFS which is the National Weather Service/ NOAA, the Euro is a commercial model you have to pay to get. The Ero also only updates every 12 hours while the others are every 6 hours.
