If I see a snake on the way to the lake or stream I’m giving it a wide berth. I don’t know the difference between a water snake and a cotton mouth.
BK pmed me and told me to tell you I am sure those are great pictures as usual and thanks for posting.
Interesting question and got me thinking of the snakes I have seen recently and there is not much to report. The most interesting and largest I have seen was while fishing on the mississippi going to lock through the hastings dam late at night. Approaching the pull cord to let the dam operators know I wanted to lock through I started reaching out and realized it was not the cord but a very large snake wrapped around the rungs of the ladder. I guess the light attracted insects and the snake was taking advantage of the situation. Gave me quite a start and had to go around again and knock the snake into the water to reach the cord. Will not forget that experience. Other than gartner snakes or the large snapping turtle have not seen many snakes on my walks.
The rip rap along much of the Mississippi River, especially backwater channels near highways, is a great place to get a real cardio workout in the summer….be fishing and minding your own business and feel something brush your pant leg and look down only to find about a five footer of some denomination resting between your pegs. Its amazing how agile one can be on rip rap when attempting to put a little distance betwixt his self and a scaly creepy crawler.
That happened at the Red Wing lock as well. Although I don’t know if someone though it was a cord or not. LOL!
That would wake anyone up!
Nice shots Len! And thanks for posting that Rat Snake. Not too common around here, but your post made me look into it a little more. Since they love eating birds eggs in trees, I don’t just look in the water for snakes anymore. LOL!
@mplspug1 I posted these before but after not even thinking about touching one for the last 62 years, I decided it was time to walk through the barricade of the fear of them damn things.
Jen at the Carpenter Nature Center helped put this corn snake into my trembling hands. Next step is to learn how to pick up a snake on my own.
PS Len, if I saw one of those in the woods I would still jump into your arms!
I occasionally fish the Zumbro river north of Rochester. This guy was hit by a farmer I know mowing hay in that area. I think twice with every step now!
have seen a few dead rattlers through the years. the only alive one in recent memory was on the stairs at my feet when I was taking this photo of my wife at Wyalusing state park a couple years back. took the photo and saw movement near my feet…this old fat boy surprised the wife at how fast I could move. sorry no snake photo..
There’s a reason why I live in a place so cold I don’t see any of these.

Me too. Well, almost cold enough.
I know they have their place but I’d still kill every one I saw.
Maybe. Not sure sure it’s legal to kill rattlers?
Nice photos. The eyes on the water sankee are cloudy as if it is soon to shed its skin.
Gorgeous photos, Len! I was sitting outside reading with my dogs earlier this year in July when Fritz got up from snoozing and pointed to the ground… I looked up and found this guy slithering past us! Many people would go inside, but I rushed the dogs inside, then I fled back to Mr. Snake to see if he wanted to play. He did not. It was fun to watch him though and it takes everything I have not to touch him. Even with that large mouth lunging towards me.
Coral snake last weekend.
Just kidding it’s a Scarlet King Snake. I was pulling dirt out of a pot when he came out of the side and scared me.

Why kill them? If you avoid them, they will avoid you. And yes – it is illegal to kill Timber Rattlesnakes in Mn.
