smoke pole test – Clean Vs Dirty

Thought this was a bit interesting with my new black powder. I’ve shot a lot of different smoke poles, but this is the first I bought.
    Shooting the 50cal. Thor (Barnes) bullets/409 110gr by volume – 200 yrds w/ optics

Shot completely clean, then bore snaked and shot at alternate target. Completely cleaned after 2nd shot, then repeated. Amazing what a dirty barrel does

Which powder makes all the difference in the world. I use BH209 smokeless in all of my guns except for one T/C Renegade single trigger which has never been fired, however I do have everything to shoot it including granulated T7 in ffg or rs.

The bH209 likes a dirty barrel so a fouling shot on a clean barrel is suggested. After the first shot the most important part of any cleaning is the breech plug’s flame channel and pin hole and those should get cleaned with a drill and pick after maybe twenty shots. The barrels on all of my inlines have seen upwards of 40 consecutive shots with the 209 powder and not need any barrel wiping whatever. I think most will tell you to leave the barrel dirty between shots using the 209. Wiping will just hinder any search for accuracy. That breach plug though, it need to be reamed and a pick run thru the pin hole religiously regardless of what powder or pellet you’re torching.

209 primers are what causes the breech plug issue, not anything to do with powders.

I agree. After just 4 or 5 rounds you can easily see the build-up in the flash hole.

This will be a fun project for the summer. A lot different than sending 50-100 rounds down the traditional rifles. Now that I have a reference point or baseline, I’ll change up the load & powders and send multiple dirty rounds to see the group. I just have to be realistic in what is a good group.

What gun and what powder? Are you doing a bullet/sabot or those lowly powerbelts?

My two .50 long guns use 77 grains weighed [110 grains measured by volume] of BH209 powder, .44 cal 300 grain XTP Hornady pistol bullets in green crush rib sabots lit by Winchester 209 shotgun reloading primers [blue box]. Fed 209 and CCI mag 209’s work well too. DON’T use any of those 209 primers sold as muzzleloader specific primers….way too cool of a flame for states bordering Canada during a muzzleloader season.

My .45 inline uses 70 grains weighed of the BH209 powder [100 grains by volume measure] with a .40 cal, 200 grain XTP in a blue sabot lit with the same Winchester primer. This and the two 50 long guns will plant five to ten shots inside a 1″ bull at 100 yards. Uncanny accuracy.

My .50 cal inline pistol gets 63 grains weighed [90 by volume measure] of the BH209 powder, a 240 grain, .44 cal XTP in a plain green sabot lit with the same Winchester primer. This load will do 1″ at 50 yards.

I bought 2 extra breech plugs, reasonable price on amazon & other sites, just switch them out after a couple shots. 209 is a great powder, easy clean.

So which is which here? I see 3 holes in one target and two in the other?

The pics flipped when loaded. Left (spread out is dirty) right pic is clean)

    Pursuit Northwest Mag 50cal
Replaced Cap breech for the primer breech
Thor Bullets (Barnes Copper) 250 grain tipped
    BH209 powder 110gr by volume

Blue tip on the bullet? Did Barnes make these for Thor? Just curious.

Can’t answer why you get the better pattern with a clean barrel. All of mine have to be primer fouled then shot for a group. Its black powder so anything can pop up. Most of the guys that shoot 209 powder do so with dirty barrels, but that’s not to say a barrel can’t get cleaned after every shot and still give a guy accuracy. I’ll add that the difference between the clean barrel and fouled barrel accuracy is never that far off and certainly in most cases be able to be hunted with using the same poi.

Funny my M10 savage is all over after I clean it , takes 4-6 shots before it’s back on

I know I mentioned the XTP’s Randy, but I have a mess of boxes of Barnes bullets ready to get sighted with in all my guns so I can go lead free to hunt. My shots are all inside of 50 yards for the most part but the long guns still get sighted for the 100 yards. The pistol is sighted for 50 but I limit myself to shots inside of 25 yards.

All of the copper Barnes fodder I have is hollow point, no plastic tip. I’ve seen some trials done with those ballistic tipped Barnes and a couple other brands that have handed out some iffy results on expansion….never with the hollow points.

My 10ML will go 100 shots before accuracy drops off. The breech plug channel becomes smaller as it is fired and is the cause. Drill it out with a 9/32″ drill bit, replace the factory vent and commence to shooting well again.

Otherwise, I never touch the bore until then either. A 50 cal brush and your favorite solvent will clean the bore as well as you will ever need it for the next 100 shots.

Pretty simple to just do all of your maintenance after each pack of primers.
