Recently purchased a clam kenai one man portable and wanna know what’s the best way to pull the sled, I plan on pulling it behind a wheeler or snowmobile to my spots and then by hand hole hopping, would it be better to just put a hyfax kit on it or build a smitty sled for it or could a guy just attach a set of skis on the bottom, any input would be great thanks

Don’t know if you can do this with a snowmobile, but i’am going to put a cargo carrier on the atv, and put the shack on that ,

If you are not going to pull by hand I would go with the hyfax. The sled is just one more thing that you do not have to mess with. If you are pulling the sled by hand the sled is very handy. Go the easy way!!!

A one man shack should not be difficult to pull by hand. The main reason for a Smitty Sled is to make pulling a heavy 125 # plus shack and gear, or one of the fold out shacks that are just a flat box.

You could mount the skis directly to the bottom of the shack and have them serve as Hyfax, but if it was me I would just put the Hyfax on if you’re concerned about wear.

    How heavy is that shack?

I attach my skis directly to my one man. Why not turn 80# into 10#?
Allows me to pile in gear and save energy.

However if you plan to pull behind a sled I think you’ll have a hard time going fast as the sled will not track nicely at high speeds. I’m guessing the skis wouldn’t hold up for long either… But at $5/pair they’re cheap to replace too.

Bruce, I would not put the skis directly on the shack, instead I would go with the smitty sled. I have a clam legend XL and it pulls easy until you get a couple inches of snow and then its a LOT harder to pull. The smitty sled will give you an easier pull in deeper snow by raising the shack instead of it “snowplowing”. Even though the shack is light, certain snow conditions want to “stick” the shack to the snow. smitty is the answer

I have the Otter Cottage which comes in at 82# dry which after you add equipment it isn’t the easiest to pull around in snow. I built a “Smitty Sled” and was amazed at the difference in ease of pulling it. But I wouldn’t suggest pulling it behind any kind of machine. The Otter Hideout looks interesting except the seat…wouldn’t want to sit in that all day.
